    Be Broadband

    Yuletide greetings

    eek (sorry for typo!)

It has come to the time where my BT Broadband contract has expired and I am in a position to subcribe to a new service - and like everyone i would like more speed and a solid connection.
I play WoW some FPS's (but not super seriously) and use my 360 as well as the obvious web/itunes etc. I do not download lots of movies and do not currently use torrent services.

I would like to improve on my current 2 MB download speeds.

I currently subcribe to BT Broadbands top option which costs me about £25 per month.

I have after much seearching kinda decided on Be's service 'Be Unlimited' at £18 per month.

So three main questions for anyone in the no plz:

    1) Am I missing out on anything major by not going for the pro servive (at £24 per month)
    2) Can anyone recommend a better/cheaper service or a good one with a free PS3/Laptop
    3) Is there any major benefit to me keeping my Netgear Router DG834N
router - or am I better off using the supplied Be unit?

I kinda think I know the answer to q2 - after all you get what you pay for...........right?

Thanks in advance for your guidance guys n gals.

    Re: Be Braodband

the Pro package gives you faster upload and a static IP. Most users won't need it. It may reduces your downstream speed in order to get that much upload.

Personally I think you should keep your own router. Using the Be router is easier, but it is quite basic and doesn't seems to do basic function like DMZ. NAT works though

    Re: Be Braodband

The only thing the pro package gives over the unlimited is the faster upload speed. However, you have to sacrifice some download speed to accomidate for the frequencies to be allocated to the faster upload you will have.

    If you have the DG834N router you should be able to use this on the Be service using the following settings ;

    Code:
Select ETHoA or Routed Ethernet over ATM or 1483 Bridged connection
There is no login information required
    Encapsulation : LLC
    VPI : 0
    VCI : 101
    MTU: 1500
The Be router is okay... it's that it tends to overheat and in a laymans term crap out and freeze when you have too many concurrent connections open when using software based around P2P protcols - mine crashed 4 times downloading the WoW updates recently.

Thank you both for the swift replies, and I think that info will be quite useful Lee

In short arwe you both happy with the Be service ? Is it nice and solid - and do you get decent download speeds ( the pro is of no use to me) and Im about 2 miles from my exchange.

BE is not alot different to any other company tbh.

They are always portrayed as being lighting quick for everyone that its available to but thats not the case.

Apparently their CS is pretty good but besides that they are much the sameness as many other IP's that do not traffic shape.

    Re: Be Braodband

Yeap - I'm happy with the crazy download speeds topping over 1.9 Mb/s on a good day.

I've only ever had to deal with their CS once and that was dealt with fast and effectively.

Crazy speed (>1MB/s) until the Be Box crash and I can't access my N299 during the holiday when no one is around to reboot it.

    Re: Be Braodband

Happy with mine, just switched from manchester to Brighton, getting 12mbps down which equates to just over 1MB from decent servers.

When I have had to deal with their CS it has been good, you do sometimes get the standard responses of stuff that you've already tried but I always end up getting issues sorted and there is the plus that it is a free phone number.

Another content Be (value) user here. I used to have Be Unlimited but I hardly needed the extra download most of the time.

CS is pretty good by comparison. I called them up one time at 6pm and didn't have to wait long. As people have pointed out, the bebox they give you (Speedtouch 585 or 780) can overheat so I'm using my old netgear DG834g which connects slightly slower but it's been running for over a month without a reboot.

I've forgotten but I think you can get cashback for joining up from somewhere.

I think they're pretty decent.. There are no miracles, but they were one of the few who supported adsl2+ and didn't traffic shape.. which is more than having constant speeds, more importantly it means you'll have P2P connections go as fast as they can without influence from the ISP.

They are also pretty cheap for what they offer

    Re: Be Braodband

sorry this is a bit late for op, but anyone else thinking of Be* may wanna take a lok at quidco.com who give £40 cashback for new Be signups.

speed wise, i just joined Be a few months ago from a BT IPStream Max connection (plusnet) and my pings are a little faster (around 10ms) and download speeds, well... i was syncing at around 3200k (dslmax, 2500 Kbps profiled), now sync around 5 Mbps and being adsl2+ llu they dont profile it... but most downloads speeds i've seen so far have been around the same 280 KBps I was getting earlier, though the 500 KBps I was getting on bittorrent a couple days ago was a nice surprise

and... if you have a spare BT HomeHub, Be* are one of the few ISPs you can still have a lot of HH fun with... check out the bridge and voip sections at HomeHubHacks.co.uk | HowTo / Index

Bridge the be box and use something else, their NAT implementation nevermind the Wi-fi one is very poor. Ever since using it as a dumb modem it rarely ever goes down.

Apparently the 585 they now provide is more solid. There is a Bridge template on dontbethere forums, for those who want turn the provided router into a dumb modem and finally get some stability. Ofcourse, if your one of those people running with an SNR margin of 2db for a few extra megs and see it go down often, you cant really blame the box for that!

There are a handful of users complaining about speed. However I should mention when I first joined the speeds during peak time were awful. 2-3 weeks later as promised, BT (or Be, who knows with those corporate spin doctors) upgraded the backbone in response to high peak time traffic. Its been stable ever since. Do not get me started on Telewest's response to the area's congestion issues...

Support is ok, occasionally they do need prodding in order to get things done.

Be are fine so long as you dont expect too many miracles over BT's copper lines. They're an ADSL provider, not a magic bullet.
