    Anyone done any VM haggling?

Thinking of moving to Be. We have a BT line but a separate cable one for internet - its going up to £25/month soon though as it was only the first year at £17/month (for 4meg).
I'm 2KM from the exchange as the crow flies, so it should be fairly fast and cheaper than VM at £22month vs £25. The uploads are also much better which would help as I often transfer large files as part of my job.

However, I'm happy to stay with VM if they can offer me a half decent price (I don't really have any issues). The nearest package they have is priced at £37/month for 20meg. So does anyone know if they'll budge much on my price of £25 for 4meg? (contract is up now).

4meg is plenty for me to be honest, but it actually works out much cheaper to go with Be and have a faster speed.

    Any input?
    Cheers all

I think you'd know what my reply would be don't you

I've been a bit of a slapper when it comes to ISP's - Virgin, Nildram, BTopenwound et al and so far my last year with Be was the most impressive and I've not had any issue with the connection being down or the speed at all.

if you need any tracerts etc to see how the infrastructure is - I'm sure you'll badger me to get them

Re: Anyone done any VM haggling?

The last haggle I did with VM was back in the NTL days and they gave me a decent deal.

I basically said I was interested in leaving due to sky giving a better offer on both the internet and TV front (even though I didn't have with them, or phone) but wanted to see if they could give a better deal due to being with them for a while. They reduced my fee from £20 to £10 per month, it's just a case of asking and seeing what you can get.

I still left them for Be though, and I wouldn't go back for all the chicken at Nando's.

I also have a mobile with Virgin for £10/month for 300mins/300texts which is a cracking deal. I'm sure their must be something close out there though? (It would rise to £20/month otherwise)

Be is looking better and better atm....

Re: Anyone done any VM haggling?

the upload on 20meg is crap @ 768k, and as i'm finding at the moment 20meg is just plain crap. browsing is a pain in the arse, d/l and u/l files is no fun at the moment.

i also file transfer for work and seems to take an age to transfer acad drawings, d/l from newsgroups takes longer as i can never get above 10meg (and before the 20meg rollout it was sweet as a nut and i could max my connection out, but not any more ) and i'm lucky to avg out 8meg.

if your a gamer then i'd think seriously weather to go for 20meg, before the roll-out my ping's to my clans uk server was 30-40 avg, now since the upgrade (which i never asked for, but was just done) my ping's have doubled and more (for the last 3-4 weeks my avg ping has been 85+)

the tech support in bangalpoor ( i use that term loosely as the command and understanding of our lingo and computer/network knowledge is just that...........) is next to useless and you have the privilege to pay for it now...........

me: hi, i've lost internet connection.
ts: ok sir, first reboot your pc.
me: hello, i've got no connection, the modem isn't syncing and no ready indication.
ts: ok sir, firstly please reboot your pc
me: are you listening? the modem isn't syncing to the network and isn't readying. and before you say anymore, no i haven't got a virus/spyware or anything else wrong with my pc.
ts: let me run a test..............right sir, i'm show that you have no problem with your connection.
me: so i'm lying am i?
ts: i'll book you an engineer sir.
me: ok, when's that going to be then?
ts: earliest date sir is 10 days.
me: 10days, your telling me that i'm paying the best part of £40 a month to be told that i've got to wait 10 days for a network issue to be sorted that is nothing to do with me, don't bother.

that was my last contact with virgin tech support.

the network needs money spending to upgrade it, but virgin (even when they were ntl:telewest) don't seem to be seeing that this needs doing. and now they have the gaul to be testing 50meg connections which when rolled out which i imagine would be the best part of £50 a month before the even sort out the issues with the 20meg teir.

it's not just me nor is it a localised issue, people are having the same issues throughout the country. the only reason that i'm still with them is that i refuse a return to bt, unless i have absolutely no option.

I get my 20mb for £25 a month, I tell them their service is so bad I am thinking of just using smoke signals and some flashing lights.

I got the 20MB down to £18.50 a month - just kicked up some stink about the bandwidth throttling, said I was thinking of going to BT etc etc. I was on the 4MB for £25 (the same as you, Agent) before that, so you're in with a good chance.

Good stuff, let us know how you get on. I'm not sure though if that offer I got was because they found a lot of people left them as a result of the new bandwidth restrictions/speed throttling.

Definitely worth a shot saying you're beeing throttled to 2MB because you're going over their small download limits (650MB?) and that you can get up to 8MB with BT.

Re: Anyone done any VM haggling?

Just got off the phone with them: No chance

Said I was going to go with Be ect... had a guy that really knew his stuff. Got up Samknows, checked line length etc to get the rough speed I would get.
Although the figures were WELL off (We have a BT line and not cable - I've had ADSL before, so know what I'm looking at speed wise although he wouldn't accept that) he wouldn't budge much.
Went all the way to cancel it, but he said I could have the 4meg for £17 (but a new 12 month contract), which I agreed to. I have no major problems with the service so it's not too bad really. Said he could do 20meg for £29, but I can't really justify it, although that would drop to £23 if I took the phone, but thats not my option sadly.
Played the throttling card too, but not much use.

Nice enough guy, professional and polite, tried to play all the ADSL 'downfall' cards but in the end you could tell he wasn't going to move.
Only annoying thing is that he wouldn't accept my figures for connection speed on my ADSL line because Samknows was telling him different - Even though I was being truthful and not exadurating them.

Ah well, still a £8 saving

They must have changed their turnaround policies, oh well - £8 a month saved is alright for a few mins on the phone though :-)

Oh really? Sweet Didn't know that - is there any dates?
Download speed isn't greatly important to me, the added upload with Be was the biggest temptation but thats nice to have.

Some people were told november, perhaps they meant november 2008? Can't see it happening anytime soon.

I recently changed from 4mb to 2mb but got a v+ box for the tv and XL tv package for less per month than 4mb on its own. Amazingly my first bill was correct (unlike previous times when i had changed the service) and i'm still on 4mb!(i hope i haven't jinxed it now)
