If ure on a uni network report it to the uni techie he will sort it.
noooooo - read one of my other rants about NIS being an alarmist sack of poo.
Is it always the same ip ?
if not , its just a port scan. If he was properly hacked, NIS would be as effective as a bit of bog roll to wipe up a flood.
switch those notifications off and sleep better at night ;)
What exactly is he doing to try and "hack" your friend. Often people get confused... its probably just a regular port scan etc. Also get some sygate personal firewall action, its free and doesn't "ALERT" you anytime you do something.
my mate said that somethbing to do with an 'overflow attack' comes up on screen.
yeh ive got sygate as well as norton.
Norton is popping up - so what? Its just saying "hey, look! I do a great job, please remember to renew your subscription"
Does NIS still consider a ping a "medium risk attack" ?
Or was that Zone alarm....
sounds like a zone alarm error that does. used it for about 3weeks. did my head in. sygate is good. blackice is meant 2 b good but not tried that one.
I got fed up with using silly things like Norton and Zonealarm. So I just went back to XP's nice silent protection :)
Black Ice is a worse pile of steaming ..... you need to switch the messages off, it sounds like you were being hammered by a worm. You can assume that if you are using a software firewall locally that security is not REALLY high on your list of priorities, as you have a home computer ...right? Otherwise you would use a hardware firewall, so far so good. Thing is that if you think that a software firewall is good enough then switch the messages off and be happy it is doing its job. There is so much crap out there now with BB all over that you will press messages all day.
If a hacker wants to get onto your system then he will and a good one will not trigger a firewall alert in the first place, so LET THE FIREWALL DO ITS JOB!!!
SWITCH THE MESSAGES OFF, Or SWITCH THE COMPUTER OFF.
A real hacker will get you if he wants to and software firewalls are good enough to block scripted attacks and worms. If you are really concerned about security then you need a hardware firewall. My opinion, not gold but I do work in a security position so take it as you want.
P.S. XP protection is incoming only and not worth a .... as a result.
black ice is crap.
take a look at www.grc.com he knows a fair amount about security, and why black ice defender was really taking the p*** they patched it not to fix a problem, but just to report it was fixed or something...
want a decent software firewall for free? take a look at tiny personal firewall. the older versions are the dogs, just a little tricky to get working 100%.

Steve Gibson is a media whore......
Ha! I knew it! I dunno what it was about him, and his website, but it annoyed me. He appears to act sooo smug!Quote:
