    Need guidance over uncommon problem

OK, so i am on Sky Broadband (8mb) and recently noticed my downstream speed getting lowered to 6mb every now and again, ok i wasn't really bothered about this but decided to ring up Sky to complain. The thing was, my phone wasn't working, there was no tone.

So obviously I checked all the connections, used another phone, etc etc; then the next day the downstream speed went back up to 8mb and my phone was working again. So my phone line doesn't work (Sky Digital doesn't detect the phone line either) but internet does.

What is going on? I have contacted Sky and they did **** all, wasted a week of my life by capping my speed to 3mb, nothing useful came of it, they now say I should contact BT.

Also, the flat flooded back in the summer, and phone didn't work sometimes back then too, could this be the cause? I am not sure how long this phone thing has been happening, but I'm not happy only having 6mb as opposed to the full 8mb i was getting regularly.

Has anyone heard of this before? I want to do some research before I go round someone else's house to ring BT, as their broken site doesn't work when reporting faults.

Try replacing your filter. Sounds like it's toasted. I had the same problem, ADSL worked, but the phone line didn't.

Ok, what you need to do now is find the terminal socket (e.g. the point where the phone line comes into the house). This looks pretty much like a normal phone point unfortunately, but is typically the phone point nearest your front door.

When you locate this take the front plate off and there should be a test socket in there, plug your phone in (with a filter on) and see if you get a dial tone. If you do, and your phone works, it's likely the extensions in your flat that are screwed and you need to get an electrician out to have a look.

If the terminal point DOESN'T work, then call BT as that is their responsability, if you get this wrong bear in mind you can be facing obscene charges from BT (to the tune of £60 call out, + £60 per hour or part thereof!)

Assuming that BT is your phone service provider. If they aren't (if it is Sky for example) then you will need to report the fault to them, who will escalate it to BT Outreach.
