    Any of you.........

Any of you play game over a wired lan with buddy?
If not, your missing out on some great fun.

If you have, you'll understand why I need to know, if it is possible to run two pc's with a crossed lan network to play multi player games together, as well as both pc's running wireless cards connecting to a router for internet?

Just treated my daughter to a new pc & she's loving playing Unreal 2003.

I remember a couple of years back playing it with a wired lan & it was so much more fun when you know who it is your trying to frag, adds so much more fun to it.

But we wasn't connected wirelessly to the iternet then?

So can we run both wired & wireless together?

    cheers

Duke 3D was the last LAN game I played it was fantastic... in 1998

running wired and wireless could cause issues. why do you need to be connected to 2 networks?

    Re: Any of you.........

forgive my numbness (I'm a bit lost when it comes to networks)

I thought you had to use a crossed rj45 cable lan between two pc's to play together? ,thats how a friend set it up years ago.
I seem to remember him giving us both the same Gateway number or ip address (not sure which now)

But I still want both pc's to able to connect to the internet, ie: using the wireless cards!

Is there another way round this, if so, I'm all ears!

    Re: Any of you.........

if you connect both your PCs to your switch/router give them IPs on the same subnet eg 192.168.0.101 for one PC and 192.168.0.102 for the second and the default gateway of the router then you should still be able to play together and get the net.

What router are you using or is it a modem?

    Re: Any of you.........

You could play over the wireless network. No need for a crossover cable.

I thought you had to be wired to play games across pc's?

Why is it then, that people need to join game servers to play online?

My Pc is connected with cable to the router, my daughters is connected wireless.
Are you telling me we can still play together with the set up I already have?

that what this place is for mate... giving help.

connect both your systems to the D-link. If its using DHCP you should be able to just plug the systems in or like the other post says you could do it over wireless. If you can get a wire to the d-link then do it that way.

    Re: Any of you.........

LAN gaming is good with no lag!! - tried with Call of Duty, Age of Empires series, Rome Total War and Quake.

You could use a crossover RJ45 (modular) cable which just crosses pins 1,2,3 and 6 (TX and RX). The router does the 'crossing over' if you like and, as said above, takes care of IP addressing if needed via dynamic addressing (DHCP). This also allows gaming online via the external IP address issued by the ISP to your router.

    Good gaming!

    Re: Any of you.........

I used a cross over cable a while back, a friend set it up for us and we spent a few hours kicking each others ar**es I can tell you.
But that friend is longer there to help out.

But it looks like I can getaway without using one this time & just use wireless.

Jay above as offered to help me give it a go later today.

Wish I knew a bit more about this networking malarkey.

    thanks for the input

    Goodnight all
