Can I piggy back a wireless router to a wired one?
Hi all,
A mate of mine has a rather unstable router in his flat. It keeps crashing, requiring a reboot, but only if my mate's pc is on. His 360 & PC are hooked up toit via ethernet, and his flat mate connects via wireless.
I've got an old cable router sitting doing nothing, so wondering if it would be possible for him to use that for his wired connections, and the connection to the modem, and to also connect an ethernet cable to the unstable router, allowing his flat mate to use the wireless?
It would be a stop gap solution, but he's moving soon, and will prbbaly go with Be, so there's not much point in buying a enw cable router for anothe few weeks worth of use.
Thanks.

yep, will work fine :)
plug the Wireless Router into a LAN port on your router, and turn DHCP off, and he'll get IPs from yours.

Sweet, that's what I figured, just wanted to get some proper advice.
Cheers mucker!

deffo works.
WRT54G as Wireless Access Point , 3Com Office Connect as Router for my cable connection

Sorry about the next picture, I was leaning over my homemade "rack" and couldn't actully see the screen on the Camera

Red is the cable connecting the WRT54G to the 3Com and yellow is the cable going to my Cable modem
I Turned the DHCP off on the WRT54G and gave it an IP address on the same subnet as the 3Com eg 3Com is 192.168.100.1 and the WRT54G is 192.168.100.2
I set the 3Com's DHCP is give addresses out between 192.168.100.10 to 192.168.100.20
This then gives all my wired clients an IP from the 3Com and all my wireless clients get passed to the 3Com via the WRT54G and get an IP as well. Infact I am posting via the wireless right now.
Re: Can I piggy back a wireless router to a wired one?
Yup, worked like a charm thanks. Can't get his 360 to see his Tversity server now, but that's another issue...
Cheers lads.
Re: Can I piggy back a wireless router to a wired one?
check the IP address of the 360 and see if you can actually ping it from the windows machine.
TVersity = yuck :P
Re: Can I piggy back a wireless router to a wired one?
Good plan. I managed to see the Tvserity server once, but couldn't connect, and now can't get it back.
I'll ask him to give that a try.
As for Tversity = yuck, any better suggestions? He's looking to stream .ts/.mkv/.avi encoded with h264/x264/mpeg2/divx or xvid. Sorry, slightly (!) off topic I know.
Cheers.
Re: Can I piggy back a wireless router to a wired one?
I'll have a think! I used to use TVersity to stream media from my PC to my 360, then when I got my NAS box, I felt I needed to get something better. Ended up going for a laptop, and eventually Apple TV.
Re: Can I piggy back a wireless router to a wired one?
Ah, I see.
Pc to 360 is his only option. Cheers for the info & the previous help. Amazingly, it all went smoothly, had been expecting a bit of a network nightmare...
Re: Can I piggy back a wireless router to a wired one?
instead of tversity use windows media player 11 works better

It won't stream all the stuff he needs though, like x264 in mkv, as far as I know.
Re: Can I piggy back a wireless router to a wired one?
how are you trying to connect? If you try and use the built in 360 media center it won't work you need to go to the Videos section in the xbox live menus.

That's what we're doing - it wont see the Tversity server. I'm not sure if it has something to do with UPNP (is that rigth?) settings on the Linksys router.
Re: Can I piggy back a wireless router to a wired one?
I doubt it, it could be a personal firewall issue on the server though.
Re: Can I piggy back a wireless router to a wired one?
As far as I know, the firewall is set to allow Tversity through. I'll need to sit down and take a proper look at it.
Cheers
