    Bad network performance

I made a thread a while ago about bad performance.

    My network is like this

HOME-PC1 - Stores all documents including movies, tv shows, music etc

    HOME-LAPTOP1 & HOME-LAPTOP2 - Connect to HOME-PC1 during login and get desktop/documents/music etc...

HOME-PC1 is Windows Vista x64 Ultimate
HOME-LAPTOP1 is Windows Vista x64 Home Basic
HOME-LAPTOP2 is Windows Vista x32 Home Premium

All are updated to Service Pack 1 RC1

I had this problem even without Service Pack 1 and even with HOME-PC1 with the TCP/IP connection limit removed.

My router is a RangeMax™ NEXT Wireless N Router - Gigabit Edition - WNR854T and HOME-PC1 is connected via a Gigabit line.

The laptops are at 54mbps with a strong signal.

I'm totally clueless to why when the laptops are opening files or copying they copy at around 500KB/s-2.5MB/s when I should be getting 11.5MB/s max.

    Re: Bad network performance

Wireless routers are typically about 40% efficient which means you should get about 22Mbps which is what you're expecting (2.5MB/s). Tuning the MTU for wireless network may help a small bit.

You could also try to change channel between 1,6,11 and see if there is any improvement.

One other problem is, normally when windows explorer copy files, packet loss (i.e. someone walked across the "signal". will cause the transfer rate to drop significantly, but then recover *very* slowly. I usually don't get full speed out of Windows explorer copying over network regardless of Wireless or Wired. Using some alternatives like Total Commander gives me a 50% boost in GbE speed and about 20% on 802.11g.

    Re: Bad network performance

In the HTML user interface of your router you should have an option to say for what 802.11 type you want it to cater for [in your case you should have a choice of at least 802.11G and 802.11N]. If all your wireless devices operate at 802.11G [the 54MbpS you mentioned earlier hint at that] then set the router to cater for 802.11G. Also: Firmware of this router up to date?

    Re: Bad network performance

I bought 2 802.11N adaptors and configured my router for N standards and now I get much better performance
