    320Kb/s on a 20Mbit line!

    Well, this is silly.

I just got kicked from a BF2142 server for the first time because of a high PING (472ms according to speedtest. I am also getting 320Kb/s on a 20Mbit line, which is ridiculous considering we pay £29 a month for this. I'm seriously p**sed off with this now.

I should say (although many of you will probably already have guessed) i'm with Virgin Broadband. Signed up for a year long contract, and am regretting it - they were the only people in the area offering 20 megabit, but it's only once ever been close to that magic figure.

Do I have any right to change contract at this stage (ie. half way through)? Is there a good alternative? I'm thinking one of the other ISPs in the area who offer 8 megabit might be better as long as they deliver what they say.

    Thoughts are much appreciated,
    Thanks

    Its just traffic shaping.

As far as i can tell, BE and SKY Max are the only two around that do not shape at all.

    or network maintenance/disruption.
Probably go back to normal at some point but it's always worth a 'phone call to complain as you'll almost certainly get some form of refund.

Imo cable (which I assume you have as VM don't offer 20Mb via DSL) is better than DSL.

I'm 99% sure VM don't packet shape, only cut your speed if you download so much data between certain hours of the day.

Even if they did packet shape, there would be practically no benefit having them apply it to game data - Its tiny

yeh, someone else I know has exactly the same problem with battlefield 2142 and virgin media (adsl) broadband. Strangely they dont get the problem playing gary's mod (css mod).

Your first sentence is traffic shaping.......cutting speeds during busy periods of the day so you cannot use your full bandwidth.
Alot of VM customers say that their speeds are only poor between say 5pm and 11pm then evrything go back to normal.

    It's not shaping, it's management.

Shaping would involve QoS type techniques...like packet prioritization - this doesn't.

I guess you could argue that reducing load on the network is a type of QoS - but it is definately not the same as shaping...totally different

You seem to misunderstand what packet shaping is. Look it up
A cut in speed (either purposefully or due to lack of bandwidth) due to poor infrastructure is not packet shaping. It applies to all data, not specific types.

There really isnt much you can do, cable networks congest so easily these days. You could beg them to change the UBR your on if there's another available.

When I had the 10meg package I could barely pull through 400KBytes/s using 10 connections. Good riddance.

    Re: 320Kb/s on a 20Mbit line!

OK, well now i'm on 2.6 megabit, 21ms PING, still the download speed is miles off what i'm paying for. Is there any point in me having 20 meg instead of 8 when it never reaches that high? If I had an 8 meg line right now, would I still be getting 2.6?

Ping (latency) and bandwidth are not directly related.

    Yes, probably.

At the end of the day you're sharing your bandwidth with other people in your area. If lots of people are doing heavy downloads in your area you will get congestion.
