    ADSL & Dialing 9

    Hi all,

I've recently moved in to an office that is rented inside a building.

I have my phone on the phone line thats just been installed but i need to dial 9 to get an outside line, how do I go about getiing the internet working as its not picking up a DSL connection which I'm assuming is down to having to dial 9

Will i have to get a dedicated external line ??

    Regards
    Lee

The press 9 thing is usually due to a switchboard. If this is the case, AFAIK you can pretty much forget ADSL on that line sadly (although I'd wait for someone else to back that up first)

    Re: ADSL & Dialing 9

It's nothing to do with having to dial 9, it's the fact that once you're on a private exchange, the ADSL signals will be filtered out. ADSL is nothing like dial-up

So yup, you'll need a dedicated line hooking up if you want to use ADSL in the office.

    Yup,
Your phone is running throught a PBX - no chance of ADSL through that.

You need to get onto BT and order a "Single Analogue Line" and don't tell them what you are wanting it for otherwise they'll tag it, plus you'll get the "Oh BT does ADSL would you like some of ours?"

    Re: ADSL & Dialing 9

Just to offer a different view, BT offer a virtual switchboard type thing called a featureline whereby you have to dial 9 to get an outside line. My home office line is a featureline because it's cheaper than a normal line to forward all my calls to my mobile.

It's entirely possible to get ADSL on a featureline, I've got a MaxDSL ADSL connection on mine from Zen for backup purposes.

Obviously if the OP is behind a PABX then ADSL ain't an option for now.

    Re: ADSL & Dialing 9

if you have a full internal PBX ADSL will not work as most are run via ISDN.

For ADSL to work you first need to call your provider and give them the number of your line, they then check to see if its on their list of BT numbers and if it is they activate ADSL on that line.

If you have given them the number of the phone line you are using and they say they have activate it then the "9" has nothing to do with it. Don't forget the number must be your number not the "main" site number.

If you need ADSL you normlly need a BT number that is not conected to your PBX in any way.

After much digging and delving i've found they have put me on a BT featureline, this is why I dial 9 but when you go onto BT's site it even states on there that ADSL is not compatible with Featurelines ???

    Re: ADSL & Dialing 9

I was intrigued by this! (You learn so much from Hexus threads) but I found the following FAQs

    FAQs | Featureline | Small & medium business | BT.com

One of which says that it is not ADSL compatible if it is a standatd featureline AND is part of a hunt group - so if it isn't part of a hunt group, it implies that it should be OK - otherwise get it converted to a standard line - unless you need the featureline features of course!

    Re: ADSL & Dialing 9

It's confusing as hell, because the compatibility question seems to resolve as "it's compatible if we feel like it"; we use a 3rd party ISP, and BT have always fed them the line that you can't have ADSL on a line with other services (like Featureline, which we use on a lot of our sites, or Redcare, the alarm system). However, when one of our departments placed an order with BT Openwound recently, they were told that they could have ADSL on a line with other services. I should make it clear that the 3rd party is not using any form of LLU, they're reselling BT's wholesale product, so there should be no difference between what they can provide and what BT can provide. I'd also note that BT are a bunch of pricks when it comes to moving DSL between premises; if you're with them, it's all "yes sir, we'll move all that right away sir, no problem sir!". They'll still **** it up, but they will move it. If your ADSL is via a 3rd party, they make you go through the whole cancel and re-order crap, even to move a line a couple of hundred yards, even if you're having exactly the same number, same features, everything. Words can't express how much I utterly ****ing despise those corrupt, monopolistic, incompetent, short-bussing pillocks.
edit: Sorry, that probably sounds a little bitter...

If the line is featureline compact, it is broadband compatable
