    Traffic Priority

got the missus a laptop a while ago as i was gettin a bit piffed that i couldn't get on my pc. she never used it that much until i put my foot down a bit

now when we're both online browsing or she's on msn and i'm doing some work it's not a problem, but if she's browsing or msn'ing/facebooking etc and i'm trying to play cod4 it plays havoc with my pings/packet loss sometimes.

is there a way i can prioritize my gaming traffic on my router? the router in question is a belkin F5D7230uk4 wireless g. the destructions are a bit vague. i'm not sure if it can be done, but if anybody knows any different i'd love to know how.

or can anybody recommend me a wireless router that i can.

ps. it would help if VM would sort their routing out aswell.

    Re: Traffic Priority

    Hey,

I've noticed the same problem in the past but it doesn't seem to happen since I got faster broadband and a different router, mind you I tend to host because I have a good upstream. I'm not sure you can prioritize traffic, at least you can't on most of the routers I've used. They are intended to share connections fairly equally. It does seem strange that just using MSN would cause such a huge amount of lag...

You could just disable the wireless access point (if your hardwired?) and fein ignorance at her loss of internet connection lol! but only if your an evil bugger, I used to do that to my sister when we lived together.

Looks to me like you need something with QoS, and I suspect your current setu pdoesn't allow for that.

OMG if you ask your wife she may say she wants to prioritise her MSN. seriously though you can if you buy a traffic shaping router somthing like a Draytek.

    Or a WRT based router.
Thing is, you can only control it as far as your internal network allows. Once it hits your ISP, its out of your hands.
Sure QoS will help, but if she's downloading / using too much bandwidth you will still have the same issue sadly.

True. Though if your router supports it you could put her on a seperate VLAN and enforce a bandwidth restriction on her (say, no more than 25% in and out)
