The new hope for fast internet

100Mbit/s sewer broadband rollout coming your way | The Register

Well it's not really new news but I'm sure a lot of people don't actually know about it. I doubt it'll be anywhere near here anytime soon though

Your exchange equipment is a LOT newer than that - the last electromechanical exchange was decommissioned in July 1990! (It was at Thurso, Scotland)

My grandad used to run the exchange in Aboyne (and the private secure exchange in Balmoral when the queen was in residence). He showed us round the old exchange once, it was amazing. thousands of relays and switches and clicking away. It was quite soothing in way.

The new omputerised exchange was also in place and they were doing final testing etc. It was about a tenth the size and had about 10 times the capacity

Looked like something out of star treck to me at the time.

Re: The new hope for fast internet

.. Well my exchange outputs 4MB (400KBps) maximum to 80% of users in my area, BT have said they were going to upgrade it... they did (was originally 3MB) and have a new deadline to hopefully upgrade it some more...

However of course 50's was an exageration... but i've seen the lines here they suck

Well cable really just refers to the fact that it's through fibre optic. You can't really get anything close to 100mbit without fibre optic cabling. Most other countries in europe are completely wired by fibre optic now and the UK is just miles behind..

    erm, no.

DOCSIS 3.0 can handle up to 200Mbit using regular coax cableTV systems.

And I don't think any country in the word is firbe only, the UK is going to be the first country with a 100% digital network by 2011 (This is BTs 21CN roll out that is happening round the country).

Sure some cuntries offer fibre to the home, but not many, and it is usually restricted to urban areas.

Re: The new hope for fast internet

Still on average i would say we are far behind, the speeds i get still suck and thats after 3 "Upgrades" by BT... I know there are many places in the uk where 20MB is running perfectly, however for my area speeds are beyond poo.. thats probably why i percieve this Country as "teh suck" for internet access.

Which is totally pointless as they can't supply the 20Mbit they advertise now.

This is what I'm getting right now at 05:13am on an allegedly 20Mbit connection. Not exactly prime time and I have no other network activity in the house.

Just a meaningless marketing exercise. Yes, the potential speed is there but they don't increase the capacity enough so you can't get the speed.

You should really blame the current telephone infrastructure. Whats the speed limits of optical?

With a 20Mbit connection, he won't be on ADSL - it will be a cable connection, and the speed limiation will be an ISP issue - either equipment fault, or more likely throttling or contention within the ISP's infrastructure.

Or knowing Virgin media well - a combination of all.
