Question Netgear pci adapters - removable antenna?

I have a Netgear DG834GT router, which I'm very happy with, and use it with the USB wireless adapter built into my Asus P5K-E WIFI motherboard. I'm under the impression that, for gaming, I'll be better off with a PCI card instead. But I'm concerned that with PC where it is, the antenna will be low down and up against a wall and not get a good signal from the router. I have a antenna on a 1m drop cable (came with motherboard) so my question is does anybody know if antennas on Netgear PCI adapters are removable? I'd like the WG311GT if possible since that is 108Mbps like my router.

    Cheers,
    Dave

I don't think a PCI version is going to make that much difference. If its an FPS like CS:S you must really get a CAT5 cable to your router or you will find your self missing shot after shot.

Hardly, I've gamed on a wifi connection for about the last 5 years. Dlink card with a high gain antenna connected to a wrt54g with modded firmware. No noticeable difference in ping from a wired connection.

they are on the wpn311 prob are on most of them as it would not be possible to slide into the pci slot otherwise.

what's wrong with the wless on the p5k-e?

I used to Game on the same setup as you, if you play CS:S or any other FPS you will find that your hit reg will be off with wireless, there is no two ways about it. I found that my skill outgrew wireless and I had to cable the PC to the router.

    Trust me on this one.

Nothing wrong with it really, I just thought USB introduced more lag (and I don't mean ping!) than a wireless PCI card. Does anybody know for sure, or is it just one of those rumours that never gets proven one way or the other?

I'd like a wired connection but a complete non-starter now. Wish I'd had the foresight to get cable under the carpet before splashing 4k on professionally fitted carpets upstairs (PC and router at opposite ends of first floor).

    Cheers,
    Dave

I agree. There will be little or no difference between the onboard wireless and a PCI card. If you want the best results for gaming then go with the Cat5 cable.

MadduckUK wireles is not consistant. For online first person shooters you need a steady stream of data from your network card to your network, packets are time dependant in a first person shooter. If you use wierless there is a very very good chance that your packets will be sent in bursts due to many factors. A lot of things can cause wireless to hold back trasmition for a split second thentrasmit all the packets in one big go. To you it will feel like you fired first but still died but there is no actuall packet loss.
