Need some pretty urgent help regarding network switches

As detailed in the legendary Feisty thread, my network switch just took a dump.

I need to get it back up and running by 9am tomorrow (yay!)

The only switches I can find in general retail stores are 8 port versions. I need 24 ports.

Would you visit PC World, by three (or maybe four) of these at £34.99 each PC World - BELKIN F5D5131UK8 10/100 8-PORT NETWORK SWITCH use them until you could get your hands on a decent switch and then return them/sell them?

Or would you laugh in the face of productivity and order a switch tomorrow for next day delivery?

If the latter, what switch would you get - currently have an Intellinet 10/100 24 port gigabit switch (rackmounted), no bells, no whistles, just does the job. No need for managed switches just yet.

    Ta in advance.

Re: Need some pretty urgent help regarding network switches

Is it 10/100 or gigabit? Or do you mean it's 10/100 with a gigabit uplink? I'll be honest - I've never heard of Intellinet at all, so I'm not familiar with the kind of kit you need but you should bear in mind that if you're going to get some 8 port switches in as a stopgap you will lose some ports for linking them together, so 3 certainly won't give you the 24 ports you require.

Do you not have another local IT supplier that you could pick something like Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK up from? (I know it's only 10/100, but I'm not clear as to why or indeed if you really need gigabit) It'll set you back roughly the same as each of those 8 porters. While you're at it - buy 2 and keep one as a spare. If you're running close to full switching capacity and it's going to cause big issues if one fails it's the kind of thing keeping one as stock for (I know, no doubt teaching you to suck eggs, but...)

EDIT - if you have a budget but don't want to make the leap to the Cisco grade kit then Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK are pretty decent - any of Netgear's ProSafe stuff is generally fairly solid.

Does your local PCWorld have a Business section? They could well have 24port switches in stock through there.

Have a look at PC World Business - Taking Care of Your Business

Even if you don't use them much, it's always handy to have a business account with PCWorld. Loss in productivity is worth far more than any increas in cost beacuse you have to get something in a rush from there.

What is your budget? Need layer 3 switching? Managed? Stackable?

For non core stuff I always buy HP ProCurve switches.

I typed in a fury, obviously bashing keys and hoping for the best (spelling, sense etc all thrown to the wind)

I have a 24 port 10/100 rackmount unmanaged switch with all but two ports used.

I need a minimum of 13 ports for tomorrow as a stopgap, 16 if possible. 16 would mean three 8 ports, as you rightly point out, due to the uplinking of each port.

Do you not have another local IT supplier that you could pick something like Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK up from? No local IT suppliers carry the kit I need at such short notice. And that's an amazing price, the best I can find in stock for pickup tomorrow is a a 16 port 10/100 switch at Maplin for £60 It's a no-name brand but it'll serve a purpose until I can order a decent switch tomorrow (Tuesday)

I have an account with PCWB but they couldn't do anything for me at that late stage in the day.

Budget is sub £300 (but I think even that is too much), as above, productivity is far more important. It needs to be rackmountable and solid. I've not had to buy a switch for a few years, so no idea what they cost.

    The switch I have now is discontinued, but is similar to this;

    Products: 16/24/32 Port Rackmount Switches

If the replacement can equal and better this then brilliant. My network consists of one server, a handful of printers, 15 desktops and a Smoothwall - it's nothing major but is critical to the functioning of the office, sadly.

The UPS died a week or so ago and the replacement hadn't yet arrived. The fact the server is still working is a miracle.

Cheers for the advice thus far

Buy Netgear FS726T ProSafe 24 Port 10/100 Smart SwitchrubbishFS726T-100EUS from CCL - Online Retailer of the Year 2007

with £6.80 for next day delivery (they are good!) Or you could get a 24 port without the gigabit ports for slightly less.

Maplin switch installed and I have half a working network

I've ordered the switch above (cheers peter and madman) for next day delivery.
