Can i get faster broadband? (It's a long Shot)

Right now i am on BT. Our contract has been up for ages so we're looking to switch. My closest exchange is Balmoral which according to google is exactly 5 miles away (by car).

Now, as far as i'm aware, we're at the limit where you can/cannot get broadband, The Speedtouch didn't work, the voyager didn't work so we opted for a D-link router and when we decided to install wireless are now using a netgear router. The BT homehub just about works in our area so that gives you an indication.

The basic statisics the routers throwing at me are as follows:

Now i know there are ADSL2 trials going on in my area and for somereason they decided not to involve the customer who had the hardest time getting the broadband going (infact, we set up most of the areas broadband)

My question is, If i switched to say Sky broadband, would i notice any increase in speed or reliability. Reliability is the main one to be honest. I've heard i can discconect my ring wire from my phone box and thats supposed to cut down on interference, does this work?

    Thanks in advance

hey ToG i am afraid you got some band connections speeds.
sky are great but there internet spped are somtimes poor. my friend has sky broadband and has been complaining if i were you i woud phone up bt and tell them to check your phone line as this could be the cause. if not then switching would be a best idea. if u switch thease would be the great broadband service: aol, be, tisscali. hope you the best luck

Disconnecting the ring wire can help in some circumstances - particularly if internal extension wiring is in poor condition.

Of all the ones to switch to, Sky is the cheapest. There are no faults with the lines, where there are any then whole broadband goes out (and it has happened a few times before).

I only have one phone socket in the house (in the hall) and the house was built about 1997ish.

In that case, you have no ring wire to disconnect!

As i said, i'm clueless about all this. I just had a check with Sky. They're offering the same as BT for £10 a month, as opposed to our £25 idd one.

Does anyone know if that means i have to keep my sky tv for a year atleast then?

According to those figures you provided (signal to noise/attenuation) you're getting the best speed possible with that line with ADSL. I'd be interested if you did manage to try ADSL2 and what sort of improvement you might get..

Out of interest, is the incoming phone wire copper?

Well, I get a fairly steady 1Mbs on a line that reports similar figures, though I had to disconnect all the extension sockets in the house to get it to work.

You had no idea how gutted me and my mrs were when we found out that's the best we could get as we thought moving into the town would improve things!

The figures only relate to the speed he's currently getting. If he tried to get 1mbps on that line the figures would be worse than yours.

I have slightly worse signal numbers, but at 6mbps.

Are you referring to the myths and legends surrounding aluminium cables?

His house was built in 1997 - Al mcables were used in the late '70's and early 80's.

However Al cable is NOT of itself a problem for ADSL. AAt the frequencies ADSL uses, the skin depth and differences in conductivity are not significant - however there can be problems when Al and Cu are spliced together and they get damp - resulting in corrosion and high resistance joints which vcan be detrimental to ADSL signals. But given the age of the property - it isn't likely to be relevant.

I am around 4.3 miles away from my exchange with BT, with that in mind i decided to go with NTL (now Virgin) and i get 4mb at the moment, and they have also stated that i can get 10Mb, so now sure if its worth a shout, but though i would let you know.
