    Extending an Ethernet cable

    Hullo

Just wondering if such a thing exists as an ethernet extension adapter. My room has an ethernet cable connected to a router but it doesn't reach my computer, so was wondering if i could buy another ethernet cable and attach it to the existing one. I'm connected on wireless at the moment and it's a bit annoying.

    Thanks, Olie

P.s I'm sure this exists I just don't know what the name of one is so haven't found it yet.

    Re: Extending an Ethernet cable

Why not just get a replacement cable? I think you can get up to 50metres and they are pretty cheap too

    Here you go:
Maplin > Inline Coupler for Networking

Personally I would get a longer cable, but those couplers can be useful when you only need it temporarily.

Ethernet cable can be up to 100m without needing boosted.

EDIT: Jay beat me to it. Although postage for jsut that would be a lot from Scan

    Re: Extending an Ethernet cable

I'd go down the new cable route, if you can. The couplers are all good and well, but I'm not conviced they'd provide the same stability/speed as a full cable.

I got one from ebay though, it worked fine, but as I say, a whole new cable is a better option.

i bought a bunch of couplers at a fair a while back, had some borrowed by geeky mates, still got about 3 left.... Damn useful things to have (a long with a selection of patch cables!)

Certainly are - especially when you have a system out for test and need to extend that network cable by a couple of feet! I always carry one with my laptop, together with a cable or two.

    Re: Extending an Ethernet cable

Or when the wireless on your router dies and you have to string a cable to your laptop. But your longest cable doesn't reach, so you need to move the router so it is sitting in the middle of your living room floor.

A coupler would have come in hany a couple of weeks ago

Shame it was about 10 at night when I was doing all this. Couldn't find my CAT5 crimper either so making a longer cable was out the window.

    Re: Extending an Ethernet cable

ok this is a bit off the park but relates so bear with me.

just doing a project at work where we have 3 HMI screens in 3 locations on a site (sorta like one master and 2 slaves) for liquid depths and pump pressure etc (very boring). now the master is connected to a 4-port router and the wiring for the field connections would have been in armored swa cable, now the thing is that the distances between the master point and the slaves have increased.

slave 1 is now some 370 metres away from the master and slave 2 is 300 meters away. am i likely to have issues with these distances? and what could be a way round it without the need for a booster or signal repeater as any info accessible on the master needs to be available on the 2 slaves.

    just thought i'd ask

    cheers

yes. CAT5 is 100m max. In the past for distances like that I have used fiber.

    Re: Extending an Ethernet cable

Or you can use signal boosters every 100m.

    Here is just one example:
    Black Box: Product Display

    not cheap.

You could in theory but a small switch or hub in every 100m and use that as a booster

no their not cheap, what's more a bit impractical as there would be nowhere to power them from etc etc and a few more reasons. if the cores are shielded and not accessible to interference can you theoretically go over the 100m? i.e. will be using 1.5/2.5mm 12core swa cable (just a few spare cores in case one is damaged, which has been known to happen), so strictly speaking the field cabling isn't going to be cat5.

    Re: Extending an Ethernet cable

You might be able to get longer than that but the drop after that length means the error rate and data rate could be... well... anything.

Have you thought about a couple of small PoE hubs/switches along the way? That way the repeaters are powered by the very cables plugged into them.

Not sure about the feasibility in terms of PoE over 100m lengths and cost, though.

Did you see the 4pin model that can do 10mbit for 500m?

I don't know if this would be a benefit for you or not. Still £450 or something.
