    Crimping/Cable help ...

OK - Gonna order all my new networking gear very soon. I've decided to crimp my own cables as I want them neat, also I'm going to use termination sockets on the wall.

My question is, which tools do I need?

    www.ebuyer.com/customer/produc...oduct_uid=54896
Is that what I want to crimp normal patch cables?

Will I need any other networky type tools for the patch boxes? From what I could tell there screw terminals but I've been told that I might need this tool ... www.ebuyer.com/customer/produc...oduct_uid=54894

Do I need that other tool? Is there anything else I need (apart from the usual screwdrivers, cables stripper etc.)?

Also I know that solid FTP cable will break up if you move it often and its designed to be put into, on, around walls etc.

Is there any disadvantage from using UTP cable (the flexible stuff) just I'd like to only buy one big reel of cable but want the bendy stuff (UTP) for patch cables and certain longer free cable runs?

Those e-buyer links take me to a 'this page is not available' thingie.

Good quality electronic tools, good cutters and wire strippers required, plus crimp tool.

RS do a very good crimp tool, also do all the connectors, but it's a bit pricey.

I bought the Maplins one about 6 years ago, does a perfect job, reasonably priced and if you're near a Maplins store, no bother with mail order (or e-buyer, for that matter).

Yeah - I got good quality electrical tools, just not a crimper. I was just using EBuyer as an example ... close to a maplins and was prob gonna get it from there!

So is it just the Crimper I need? Even for those patch boxes?

Ah, the patch boxes, had forgotten about those.

It's some time since I made a patch box but as I remember you'll need a small tool for those as well, a small 'v' shaped device that pushes cable into a metal slot, similar to telephone cables.

But I'm not absolutely sure about that, I'll have to check it out.

I got my crimper from screwfix for a tenner, this piece of kit has served me well

Your gunna need a punch down tool to do the sockets:

Ebuyer do them for about seven quid......

Ive just done three of these in our new house.

Thought so ... right, I'll pick a crimper and a punch down up tomorow!

aparently you can get an RJ45 wall socket that has another RJ-45 socket on the back (inside) so you can just plug your patch cable into it :S - not sure why u'd what to tho, its easyer to use the type above that have to put a plug on it first!!!
