NTL, cancel or get retentions to give me a better deal?

Well, it seems that NTL have finally taken the piss for the last time.

I'm an existing loyal customer and have been since they first announced there cable modem deals in my area.
I've always been on the highest connection they had available, which iirc started at 600kbps, then 1Mb, then 3Mb and now were all the way upto 20Mb
When I joined with them they wouldnt give me internet unless i was an existing customer so I had to have there basic TV/Phone package as well which was about £15 at the time iirc.

Now I'm paying £11 for the phone, the bill for which was £60 odd quid for the last month, there were about 15 calls, all to mobiles so there "4p plan" which they moved me too is of no use to me at all.
I'm apaprently on "L" TV now as well, pretty sure I'm not getting all the channels they say I am doing, maybe because I'm still on a really old Pace STB.
XL Internet £38 for "20" (apparently) Mb...

Got the bill yesterday, £105, had a look on there website, lots of brilliant deals for new customers, rang up n had a chat with someone "somewhere" and they said that they'd give us £9 discount...
Were paying jsut over £60 for "services" and the rest in call charges..

Needless to say while the missus is on maternity leave she's gonna be ringing round today to talk to Sky...

Re: NTL, cancel or get retentions to give me a better deal?

Was in a similar situation recently, L internet (4mb), L tv and phone calls anytime, the bill had shot up for some reason in the last couple of months to 70 quid from the usual 40 so i rang up and i'm now getting everything for £25 a month for 12 months.
You should try ringing up again and being more demanding but not rude, tell them your considering leaving and they should give you a deal.

    "New Customers Only"

I hate that phrase. What about us loyal customers paying you monthly for services - where's our bonus for our loyalty.

Personally never had to deal with NTL - Just Telewest/ Virgin Media (or whatever they're called this week) who now encompass NTL too.

I'd be on the blower to NTL to moan about that bill only *after* being on the phone to Sky/ BT/ some other provider thats not Tiscali or TalkTalk to get a deal that you can get NTL to compare to.

    [/off soapbox]

speak to retentions as they should be able to do you a far better deal.

If 15 calls to mobiles cost you ~£49 they must have been some length.
adding Mobile for £1.50 pm would chop 25% (£12) off the call costs.

QFT; also, see whether they'll do you a deal on the V+ box to get rid of that Pace. They've been offering them half-price to new customers, but did the same deal for us, and the difference has been night and day. The old Pace box was unreliable as hell, lost the programme guide at least once a day. The V+ has been fine, also does an excellent job of upscaling, and lets me record Ashes to Ashes and Eureka while the wife's watching something else. Can also export to DVD/VHS which is useful... Having seen ADSL Max at work, there is no way in HELL that I'd drop cable broadband for it; "shonky" doesn't even begin to cover it.

Yup, 300mins/300 texts anytime, any network.
They also rollover to a maximum of 600/600, which I'm always hitting

Well worth it for a tenner

    £125 now

I'm mightily tempted by Sky, but don't live in their broadband area, so I would be paying a few quid for internet on top of whatever TV package I wanted.

So perhaps worth checking to see if you can get Sky Broadband in your area before you set your mind on Sky.

    Omg - thats crazy charges.

Whole reason i went to Virgin media was to be able to have internet without having to have a phone line. It does seem that most of the best broadband deals always include you having to have a land line phone though but we just don't need one. Both me and the missus have company mobiles can use for personal - as long as don't go over £200 a month (lucky i know) seems that any landline now you get ripped off. That Virgin mobile deal sounds good though in comparison tbh - would def go for that over a landline even if means missing out on those "combo" packages.

Didnt look through all the answers so sorry if this is suggested. Ring up virgin and just say your moving to sky because they have a better price and seem to be better, they WILL 99% give in. Thats how my dad got us up from the lowest tv package to XL and with £10 off our bill every month(basicly we were paying like £2 for me, still are) and we got to 4mb/s recently up from 2mb, i was annoyed because of this capping if you can even call it that, doesnt annoy me anymore as its only till 9pm, we called up said we moving to sky and boom, 4mb would be upgraded and £10 off your monthly bill.

I cant speak personnaly for sky or anything as ive been with virgin/ntl/telewest since the beginning with dial up xD. But i dont hear great things, even watchdog went to see them O.o. Shame virgin are being retarded to you but give that a try and you should be able to get something. It helps loads if you got landline/broadband and tv with them, lots of leverage.

    Hpe you get this sorted.

edit: just saw your post about 4mb/s max, thats probably because it uses the bt phone lines, never great. On direct exchange(virgin and i think 1 other company O.o) then you can get much faster, i know virgin have changed it so even if you are far away from the exchange it wont effect your performance (give or take a few kb/s ofc)/
