Cable router bound to single PC?

    Hey guys,

I was just round at my girlfriend's place and her flatmate said her laptop wouldn't work using the supplied modem (using ethernet). The other laptop there works just fine (also ethernet) so I wanted to check the modem isn't somehow bound to a particular MAC address during the install process (using their silly CD :-) ).

Also sorry if a similar thread's been started elsewhere, obviously not searching for the right things,

    Cheers,
    Temp

In the old days you used to have to register the MAC with them before it would work. These days it should "just work", although a total cycle of the modem (power it off and on again) can be needed depending on the brand/model.

It's a fairly new modem (2 years old tops), must just be something on her laptop as it's coming up with "Limited connectivity". I'll ask her if restarting the modem works if she hasn't already tried

Check windows isnt looking for Authorization over a USB drive or anything (Properties of the LAN connection) Try switching around the ports, (Use the working ethernet on the non-working laptop, see if it works)

Never heard of that before but worth a shot, cheers. Unfortunately there's just one ethernet port on the modem and one on the laptop so can't do that. I was going to try another (third) laptop just to check.

The "Limited or no connectivity" error messge on windows just means it didn't get a dhcp address. Do you have a login to the router to check it's setup?

Umm I could probably get a login, could mean a phone call to VM though. And all broadband enquiries cost something like 25p/min. I think I'll leave it to them to find out :-)

Is there an obvious reason one computer wouldn't get a dhcp address when another does?

Is the network adaptor set to look for DHCP and not a static one?

Good question - I'll mind and ask her, ta :-) I have no idea how she had it configured before now so it's a possibility.
