Switching ISP

Gave Pipex the boot today, paid up and got them to cancel our agreement with them and they gave me my mac code.

Now on the look out for a decent ISP. Which must incliude a Telephone package. I've been looking at Eclipse option 2 or 3 with their what looks like to be a pretty fair fair usage policy and as I download a fair amount every month and play alot of games something like a full on 40 gig cap every month is going ot be no use at all. With 3 of us using the internet (me, my Dad and sister) an overall 40 gig cap would go out the window quickly.

If there are any other suggestions for who to use then let me know, but it must have a telephone package (although you are paying a few quid extra to have it with Eclipse)

Dad was looking at AOL and TalkTalk, btu don't really like either of those.

sky BB has had good reviews by people on here, and they do phone packages

Trying to avoid sky, a mate of mine signed up and it took them 3 weeks to get his connection working correctly.

If you are on a nearby Be exchange, go with them, on the condition that you do the following:

- don't use Be's DNS severs. Use OpenDNS or 4.2.2.3, or your own.
- don't use the BeBox (Speedtouch 585v6). Use a Netgear DG834GT from Ebay with the UberGT firmware.
- don't use Be's email (costs extra ££ anyway).
- don't use a dynamic IP. Make sure it is static. This avoids Be's occasionally flakey DHCP servers.

You could go with O2 if you have a contract mobile or regularly-topped-up-PAYG account with them. Extra £5/mo for one static IP though.

A relative went with Sky BB last week - the switchover from Tiscali was fine.

Don't even bother thinking about Eclipse - they are turds. I migrated from Eclipse to Be in October.

Good CS and the best prices going anywhere bar none.

Wasn't my call to make in the end as Dad pays for the broadband, he went eclipse, so only time will tell what things are like when we get the change over, they can't be any worse than Pipex/Tiscali.

Like I say, not my problem really, I was quite happy to stay with Pipex but Dad was getting frustrated with the Tiscali situation and the decline in speeds.

The connection was enough for me to play TF2 on which really is all I'm bothered about these days.

if your in a LLU area, the chances are that eclipse will move you over to a tiscali connection... the tiscali that owns pipex... oh dear

Thanks for this tip. I've been using OpenDNS but didn't know about 4.2.2.3

It seems more responsive than Pipex/Tiscali and faster on tests. What is it, please?

Wow, them being shown on watchdog a few months back made them sort themselves out then?XD. Glad i can stop saying, dont go with sky or tiscali. Now i can recommend virgin media simply because there is no download limit and i have had no troubles with them, customer support is a pain with the pre messages but after that they seem to sort it out fairly quick.

I'm getting a phone line (after 6 months! ) put in next Monday and am looking for an ISP. Checked my exchange and I can't get Be or Sky. Cable's not an option either. To make it a bit more complicated, chances are I am only going to be here 9-10 months (hopefully). I'm looking at around 20-30Gb/month usage and BT reckon I will only get 3-4Mbs.

So far I am looking at Adsl24. Anyone got any other options for me?

anyone else noticed how when broadband first came out it was the be all and u can do what u like download wot u like and it would make dial up look crap, well here we are on years ahead and all u hear is problems with broadband poor connections, poor speeds, people jumping isp to isp and now all this capping crap forcing us to look elsewhere isnt broadband fast becoming the biggest con ever???
