    Router stops web traffic

I've got a weird problem with my Netgear DG834PN router. At random it seems to block HTTP traffic. I'll be happily browsing when all of a sudden it stops working and I can't access any sites in either IE or Firefox. Everything else works fine - I can ping addresses, Bittorrent downloads continue and Usenet carries on downloading at full speed. A few minutes later it resumes and lets me browse again.

I've checked all the router settings and can't see anything obvious that could be causing this, and there's nothing in the logs. Any ideas, or is the router knackered?

    Re: Router stops web traffic

could be your isp dns servers, i had this problem with bethere, all web progs worked fine except for web browsing, their dns servers would go down intermitentley, i just changed the dns server that the router used, opendns is a good choice for alternative dns server.

Check Windows 'system' event log for errors from the tcpip service saying "too many connections."

    Yes, this.
I am aware of the tpcip limit in Windows XP (I'm running Pro, btw), and I know there's a patch, but I was under the impression that it didn't actually do much. Done a spyware and virus scan and eliminated any unnecessary background apps.

Sounds like DNS server problems - unless you've ruled it out it's the first thing I'd try

At random, or only when using bittorrent/usenet? when it stops working can you do ping Google or similar to see if your DNS is resolving?

9/10 of these sorts of issues are down to badly set up p2p apps and the like or your ISP having a hissy fit.

At random, not just when bittorrent or usenet is going. I can still ping.

    Re: Router stops web traffic

Still getting TCP/IP errors, though very infrequent now. Every so often there'll be a "TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts" error, though not at the same time as the connection drops. Now all net traffic cuts off, including any file sharing, sometimes as much as every every ten minutes. It doesn't seem to occur if I'm just using Xbox Live, though, only when I'm on my PC. Could something on the PC be overloading the router?

Except for Windows caches DNS so that might not really help. Nslookup on the other hand would.

I don't suppose you're using Kaspersky are you? The internet security module has been a pain for me - when pipelining is enabled in Firefox, sites start failing to load.

I know that some routers can also trigger their flood protection when there's too many connections - e.g. speedtouch ones can lock down for a bit when you do a scan for servers in steam games.

    Re: Router stops web traffic

google the patch and set it to 600, ive never had the problem come back since, although i caped the torrent at 500 connections to be sure.

i had the exact same problems and could always stop them by exiting the torrent and within a minute i could surf again.

    Re: Router stops web traffic

It doesn't always happen when using BitTorrent, in fact I notice it more when I'm just browsing web sites or playing games.
