Moving within the home has borked my connection.

Hi all, I've moved room my computer is in, I used to have a telephone extension cable going upstairs and this had my filter etc plugged in.

Only difference now is I've moved computer too room next door and stuck that same cable through a hole in the wall, also the tv aerial cable runs through there.

Now my router disconnects every few minutes so I've resorted to using a usb modem, although this also disconnects pretty often it also reconnects without any user intervention so atleast its usable for browsing etc.

My routers line attentuation says 63.5db and snr margin of 5.5db

    I'm on max dsl.

Is this most likely a cabling problem? Would a RJ11 cable to a filter on the downstairs master phone socket provide a better signal than a phone extension?

Hard to say - better still would be to have the router downstairs near the master phone socket and run cat5e cable from there to your computer. Failing that, use cat 5 for the extension lead (as you propose, but still kep the filter near the router.

However, if you are using the same extension cable, merely running it through a hole in the wall shouldn't affect things, so check to see that all the connections are securely made and nothing else has changed.

Make sure that you are using a good quality BT specified filter, and that the same quality is used on all other extensions in the house.

Strangely my usb modem diagnostics has not increased the loss of framing, loss of signal or loss of link counters for past few hours, maybe the problem was elsewhere. I'll keep an eye on it and try with the router again later, its easier to spot disconnections with that as I have to open the router page and restart the connection.

Re: Moving within the home has borked my connection.

63.5db is a little high, on Cable anything beyond 57db is too high... Could just be a dodgy cable. I had the exact same problem turns out the extension wire was completely screwed, fed the phone fine. But got constant disconnections. Now i am a happy Homeplug user =]

SNR of 5.5 is VERY low and would be disconnecting i should think.
