    Dual Voip/Landline Telephone suggestions

Hi all, i'm researching telephones for my dad and i'm going to get him set up with skype. I've been looking at phones for him and i think the best bet would be to get a phone that can handle landline calls and VOIP calls. It must also work straight from the router, so the PC does not need to be on.

So far i've come up with this - Buy Philips VOIP8411B/05 PC OFF DECT. at Argos.co.uk
My dad is keen to buy from argos because he has a lot of nectar points he can use.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or recommendations, they don't have to be from argos i'm just researching which phones work well.

    Thanks

    Andy

Does it have to be Skype or would you consider another service provider using SIP?

Skype is a closed propretary protocol that oonly works with other Skype clients.

SIP is an open protocol that allows you to connect to any other SIP based phone, regardless of the provider - and there are a lot of SIP based VOIP providers to choose from.

I use sipgate.co.uk - free phone service over your broadband link - voice over ip provider.

It provides me with free SIP based pure VoIP telephone calls, and a local exchange number so anyone dialling in from a conventional landline pays their service providers standard charge for calls to that exchange.

I also have a softphone omn my laptop, so wherever I may be in the world, provided I have a BB connection, I am still only a local/national phonecall ffrom the UK.

(A friend of mine has a house in France - with BB, and set up a Sipgate account in UK. Again it is a local/national call from a UK landline, and free from another SIP provider.)

Have a good look at the link.

    Re: Dual Voip/Landline Telephone suggestions

Thanks for the link, the main aim of getting a VOIP/DECT phone was so that all outgoing calls could be made through VOIP, and skype pro offers free calls to UK landlines + 3.3p connection fee i think, which would be a considerable saving for my dad over the provider he is currently with. Having looked at Sipgate the calls look more expensive to landlines since they are charged per minute. I think i need to look at how long my dad is making calls for to compare plans though.

Does anyone have any recommendations on the hardware side of things?

We're trying out VOIP in our office. Mainly to take advantage of calls we have to make to Dubai every so often.

Our setup is a Draytek 2910VG using Draytel as our SIP provider.
Into the Draytek we've just got some ordinary telephones (a really old BT DECT phone and a plain ordinary BT handset) - all this just seems to work fine and Dandy for us.

Admittedly the Draytek purchase price is a wee bit high (about £189+VAT), but it works straight from the router and isn't dependant on any PC. Plus we've got a geographic (edinburgh 0131) number for incoming calls.
*and* we can see all incoming/ outgoing calls online within Draytel's website.
