Question Sync Files / Vista Wireless Network Question

Hi guys, i was hoping someone could help me out with this. I have word docs on the PC downstairs, and sometimes i work on them on my laptop - is there any way i can sync the files to the last saved version automatically? instead of me having to save and copy over...or instead of leaving them in the public folder (and accessing via wireless on the laptop). theres sync centre in the control panel, its telling me to start by right clicking a network folder and make it available offline :S where the hell are those. i have no idea about networking.

and how can i access another folder under my user name via wirelss? like the public folder...but instead a folder under my user name. i would be able to access my folder direct without having to put it in public.

    any help much aprreciated.

Re: Sync Files / Vista Wireless Network Question

True syncing of files is very difficult to do - and requires each change to be date and time stamped. Otherwise if you have two people making changes to same file, the application needs some form of arbitration to decide what and how to sync.

Effectively yoy are using your PC as a file server. so if you only work on that filre remotely from the laptop, and make all saves back to the PC (effectively a network drive) then the file on the PC will always be the up-to-date version. In that situation the file will be locked so that it can't be changed by anyone else.

The problem arises if you download the file to your laptop and work on it remotely - no network connection. Provided no-one else has worked on the original file, when you return, you just upload it it. However, if someone else has changed the original. their changes will be ;ost.

There are versioning tools (like CVS - but there are others) that help keep track of different versions of a document, and that is probably the nearest thing. But for simplicity, just work on the master file remotely and save all changes to the master file.
