What should by yearly income be?

I live in the North West of England and my curent job title is IT Manager.

I am currently working on setting up a network from scratch for a medium business, it involves planning, costing, installing, testing and controlling the new install while supporting the current low level network.

I have 4 sites in the UK to support with approx 300 users.

The new install consists of a total ground up rebuild and migration of data from the old network to the new.

Currently I have planned and installed

    Full 2003 Domain
    Full rack setups
    Email server
    Linux servers - Squid etc
Full rewire of CAT5 (across all 4 sites)
    Patch panels
    New switches
    Terminal Services
    Thin Client installs
    Training in IT awareness
Setup and control new Contracts for internet and IPVPN
    setup a correct backup routine
setup a correct IT usage policy
Installed wireless internet install across all sites
Fully documented wire diagram, server diagrams, how to guides, room plans etc
and most of all I have sorted out all the companies licence problems and issues (and there where many)

I am fully responsible for all the above (the buck stops with me as they say)

I also run their CCTV and am fully registered to do so.

Afraid theres no fixed answer to that question - I know people who do much less than that for lots of money , but I also know people who do much more than that for not so much money

300 users is just outside the SME boundary , so try and look at equivalent stuff on jobsites. Location is also a factor - I'd pay someone in the northwest probably about at least 10-15% less due to lower cost of living ( taking the midlands as a median )

£25k sounds about right for that kind of thing - sadly being a one man hero doesn't really pay all that well

Re: What should by yearly income be?

well the mean salary in the world is about $2,800 (USD) (£1400) which is roughly about the average in
El Salvador. so if your earning over £20,000 (14 times the world average) consider yourself very very lucky.

Asking for / thinking that your worth more is just greed. pure and simple.

although, i know its human nature to want more, and if offered i would take higher wages,

j1979 - although highly commendable, you can live in some parts of the world on a fiver a day. Unfortunately, in the UK you can't. ergo you need a higher wage.

Jay - the best way to increase your salary is to move jobs more frequently than average, working your way up the ladder. It is harder to get a pay rise within the same company, unfortunately, as they have already got you.

£25K is about right for a permanent position, £40K is about right for doing the same job as a consultant.

    .
true, but the cost of living is driven by inflation and inflation is driven by people asking for higher wages.

no one in this country NEEDS more than £20,000.

Have you actually ever tried living in Essex? Or London for that matter?

And what is the incentive to work if you are going to get less than you would on benefits (if you are a single parent with a few kids £36k is possible apparently).

no ive not lived in london, the nearest ive been is Hove where i lived for 4 months. There are plenty of ppl living in London on min wage, im not saying its not hard, but it happens. Having a very good Quality of life is a different story.

Re: What should by yearly income be?

j1979 you made me laugh a little bit. There is some naivety in your statements.

I think your comments are really good but what needs to happen is for the rest of the world to live by your rules for it to work.

If I want a £150,000 mortgage (not that big these days) I need £800 a month before bills etc, now if you want to live in a box then that’s your choice but its not mine. If I am worth £25,000 to a company then I will want at least £22,000. The more I earn the more tax I pay so in the end it all goes back to the government anyway.

The people who live in London on min wage are the people who come here to earn enough money to go back to their own country and live like kings.

its not naivety by any means more wishful thinking. i was brought up to share you see.

im not begrudging you more money, just saying that you and people in general should be happy with what they have. it would be nice if everyone could have enough cash for a nice house and car.

lets just hope the well paid boffins hurry up and invent those robots from I-robot so we can all sit back and not worry about those on min wage because they're androids.

Have you thought about moving to a communist country so that you can toil in the fields and earn the same as your other comrades? On a serious note some jobs pay more than others - supply and demand - just a fact of life. Personally I could live on less money than I get but if I wasn't doing my job someone else would be so why wouldn't I 'take the money and run'? Also different jobs and wages may give rise to inequality and jealousy but they also give rise to ambition and hope...
