    Virgin Media Advice

My 12 month contract expired in Feb and VM put the price back up to £18 (from £10). I contacted them and they reduced the price down to £10 again for another six months.

As O2 broadband is now available in my area, I'd like to move to them.

Will I be able to cancel the VM Broadband or am I stuck for a further six months?

According to the T&C (from the original letter) - "...you subscribe for at least 12months, after which the contract can be ended...".

    Thank you for any advice.

hmm. It sounds like they have dropped the price in "good will" to keep you as a customer. What speed do you get?

Im personally on virgin Media because I get a faster speed than I can get on any BT Reseller because of the length of my Phone-Line between the exchange. If O2 broadband is completely wireless (aka via a 3G Modem) I wouldnt reccomend it for gaming, it has a good speed but your Ping time is usually high (at least 100ms).

The best way to find out is to call them or email I guess. :/

    Re: Virgin Media Advice

When you take up the new price, it usually forms a new contract with them. I've just done this myself (They basically cancel your service and resign you up IIRC)
I didn't know VM did 6 month contracts...all mine have been 12 months.

    Re: Virgin Media Advice

I'm pretty sure you can cancel. We had the same. VM or NTL put us on 4mb for 12.50 for another 3 months but we cancelled early. I think the months are only about the special pricing and not your contract length. Before switching to o2 check the distance you are from your local exchange. Make sure you got good phone wiring too
Plus if the standard modem that comes with o2 is crap. Get a new one. The preferred is DG834GT.

I'm on the M package with VM so it should be 2MB, I usually get (well haven't recently tested) 254K when downloading.

Most intensive games recently played - on the CBeebies page

Hope to contact VM tomorrow (God Willing) all will be well.

The lady I spoke to said they would reduce the price to £10 for six months after which I would have to call again and see if they'd reduce the price - no guarantee on the price reduction though. If I signed up to a package (Phone and Broadband) they would offer me a price which would be vaild for 12 months - I would assume that would be a new contract.

I called O2 (went through to Sales earlier only to find they close at 9pm), called again and spoke to Customer Service. I'm about 1700 metres from the exchange and they say I should be able to get around 13MB. The system was actually stating I should be able to get 17MB but the helpful customer service guy said it would be more likely 13MB. Also the fastest option I'm offered is 16MB.

Phone wiring was done by my brother (ex BT) so that will God Willing be good.

Thanks for the advice on the DG834GT - I've already checked ebay and the Classifieds here. Plus read advice in another thread.

If thats what the lady said, sounds more like a good will thing than a new contract
I signed up for another 12 months as I have a brilliant service with no issues

Have just spoken to VM and cancelled.

Service wasn't bad, but I was only signed up to Broadband with them and it was the slowest speed (2MB). On occaions (recently) the speed has been really slow, all I was doing was browsing.

About a month or two ago, I was even thinking of signing up to a Broadband and Phone package (TV package not required as don't have a TV).

    Re: Virgin Media Advice

same here, I have no TV for about 6 months when I first moved in with my g/f. Didn't need it though

6 years later and I have a 37" HD TV with al the trimmings, I think that tells you how a relationship changes over time.. lol

It was Retentions who knocked price down to a tenner. I believe it wasn't a new 12 month contract as they only reduced it for six months.
