Trying to set up WDS between 2 WRT54s, but they have identical MACs??

I thought MACs were unique? I've installed DD-WRT to both of them and they both show the same MAC address in the WDS page.

I was following a guide for setting up WDS and i'm supposed to tell each router the other's MAC address, but they are identical

Why don't you just change one?

MACs are unique, but it may be that in the firmware change you've given them the same one. They only need to be unique on one network.

Nope. They'll be part of the firmware

I'm not an expert on the WRT Firmware, but it should be an option somewhere in the menu system.

oh, i thought MAC was more secure than that , so you can just change them around to match whatever you're hacking..

Indeed, that is the idea behind MAC address spoofing

    Some devices do

The open firmwares allow changing as standard though. If you look on the device itself, it will have the MAC printed on it somewhere, usually on the bottom

WRT allow you to clone your MAC from another device..

Re: Trying to set up WDS between 2 WRT54s, but they have identical MACs??

For the OP - Devices such as network cards usually have the MAC address fixed at manufacture (the first 3 bytes are a mfr code - the rest are allocated by the mfr) but as you have discovered, some devices do allow the MAC address to be changed, particularly routers and Wireless access points. The important thing is that MAC addresses have to be unique within a given subnet.

Re: Trying to set up WDS between 2 WRT54s, but they have identical MACs??

yeah im a bit stuck now, the wireless MAC is identical on both machines, and i know somebody has just mentioned cloning the MAC but i think that changes the device MAC not the wireless MAC? I think those are 2 different things so using the clone MAC feature wont change the wireless MAC it'll just change whatever MAC the modem reads.

cant find any solutions or menus for changing the wireless MAC on DD-WRT yet

Still no luck, its a bit wierd cause there must be 1000s of people out there with DDWRT and the same MAC address

Have you tried the "MAC address spoofing" option in the firmware already? Worth at least an attempt, surely.
