    Homeplug adaptors?

After a bit of testing, I found that a wiring in my (new = 10 year old house) house is to blame for my terrible internet speeds - moving the router downstairs gives me a 1500 kbps increase. I've thoughts about moving my (Sky DG834GT) router downstairs, then using a Homeplug AV adaptor to get a signal back upstairs to my PC. Any good or bad thoughts?

Or, you could buy a £10 wireless PCI card since the Sky DG834GT is a wireless router.

Yep, along with the ping problems, less speed and wireless connection problems - no thanks, not when playing a lot of WOW etc.

    Re: Homeplug adaptors?

I've bought Netgear and Solwise homeplug adaptors and have been pleased with them. Devolo and ZyXEL are also worth looking at. Bought through Amazon or Ebuyer in the past.

    Re: Homeplug adaptors?

I bought a homeplug a few years ago....one of the best things I ever bought. I've literally not had to do anything with it since plugging it in. I think the quality of signal will depend on the integrity of the wiring in your house....but 99/100 people dont have a problem.

Really, Really, Really consider running Cat5e to rooms.

My flatmate won't let me pull up the carpets, because she is mean to me. But when we replace them (hopefully next year) i'm running oodles of pairs everywhere.

You can easily convert HDMI to run over it. Phone isn't a problem. Very high speed, low latency, and dirt cheap.

In the mean time i've got a couple of home plugs, their damn expensive considering the cable option, but we're in a single floor flat, so running cable is a bit of a pain. The speed is OK, better than wifi, but dog slow compared to what £10 of cable would do.

    Re: Homeplug adaptors?

Agree with hamd01, I'm very pleased with my Zyxel 200Mbps homeplugs. I only have a 3 BR flat but due to metal studs and solid walls my N wireless barely sustains an 80-100Mbps connection and sometimes drops below 54. My old 54g wireless often ran at under 10Mbps which is barely enough for streaming movies. If you're confident that the electrical wiring is of decent standard then go down the homeplug route. Stable, goes further, and more secure.

I have homeplugs on my sons 360. Significantly better than the wireless connection.

The wife has only permitted CAT5E in our flat if it comes out of my annual computer fund...which translates into way more than a few homeplugs, even at £45 each .

    Re: Homeplug adaptors?

    really?!

Rapid Electronics - Cat5e UTP Twisted pair cable

rapid aren't the cheapest, but are good for customer services, thats 305 meters for the price of one home plug.

given the amazing benefit of been able to shove data at full HD spec, uncompressed, is the winner for me. I've even run some for the kitchen, which whilst i've no intention of using now, can stay coiled until i've thought of a reason.

as for facias, theres a company that do a contempory flat range, a dual RJ45 socket, in brushed flat look (ie modern) for £9 a pop.

Granted, odds are will take a while to run the wire, but totaly worth it imo.

    can be had cheaper

Its worth noting that 200mbit is the syncronous rate, this is a 'con' because normally when we say 100mbit, we mean back and forth (duplex), not one way only (half-duplex).

Zyxel and 'homeplug' from netgear i belive use the same chips inside. So go for whichever you can get cheaper!

I have solid wood flooring and not enough space in the skirting to run CAT anything which means they would have to be run in the ceiling since there are several solid walls along the way. Even if I had any interest in DIY, that's a lot of fuss to get a wire from the reception (front) to the study (back). My builder charges £100/day which I wouldn't mind paying but it still exceeds the cost and convenience of a homeplug in my case. It would've been great to have the flat pre-wired with CAT5e but we got in late and the place was 95% complete .

When Scan list the Zyxel's on Today Only they usually go for a bit under £45 each which is when I loaded up on a few. Do note, they are WAY bigger than they look in the photos. Think normal transformer plug and add 50-100%. They are well finished though.

    "Wha-ppaah!"

A very topical thread for me, am in the process of buying a new house and the one we like is split over 3 floors
Ground Floor - Telephone point, ADSL Wireless Router,TV, Wii, Laptop etc
1st Floor - nothing really geeky, maybe wireless media streamer & TV in bedroom
2nd Floor - All my Star Trek stuff in display cabinets (yay, didnt think she'd let me) plus all my PC gear inc. main desktop.

Have ruled out wireless connection to main PC, due to probably v. poor signal (even with my wireless N router, it's still SOOOO much marketting but little actual performance) through 2 floors and a few walls.
Ethernet over power is a possibility, but still feels basically risky to me (house is 100 years old, electrics = who knows! )
So the CAT5 cable route is what i want to do, and since we are going to be moving in to a brand new place i'll try to get it done first thing - hope i dont need too much drilling.
I'm commenting on an internet forum. Your facts hold no sway over me.

I've learned I'm "allowed" more boy toys if I don't argue. That's what I tell myself while licking my whip marks...

CAT5e is dead easy if you get it in before all the walls go up. A friend recently renovated his flat and stripped everything back to the bricks and wood frames. He has a minimum of 2 RJ45 points in every room and about 10 in the study. No idea what he plans to do with them, but they're there atleast!

    Re: Homeplug adaptors?

MSIC, trick is to use the building to make it easy.

I ran so much cable in my parents. Phones (8 extensions) and 10base-2. When i was 11 this was nice and easy, because i could fit in the crawl spaces etc. Before the conversion for CAT5. I only ran 8 runs, which was a mistake.

Problem is now i've got a place, i've got big floor boards, agregate brick thats a bugger to chase in, and a carpet that i kinda hate, but my flatmate won't let me lift.

So hopefully next year, when changing the floor i'll be allowed to cat5e. Its going everywhere i'd ever want a TV/Stero/PC/Picture frame.

Which is practically every plug socket, then theres going to be a wiring loom in the broom closet out of the way.

Its not too hard to sink a socket, and wire behind the skirting board, but touch up pollyfililng + painting is needed.
