    Looking for a professional router

Hi does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable professional router?

It does NOT have to be a gigabit router b/c I already have a gigabit switch.

But the quality and ease-of-use of the web interface is extremely important to me.

    Thank you

Telling us what you're using it for would help a lot

Re: Looking for a professional router

Well, I would be using it for transmitting information to and from the internet.

I'm not really sure why a router has to be specialized for doing VoIP / VPN / games / HTTP / FTP / etc

It's all just data, and I would hope the router does NOT do any SPI or DPI inspection into the packets being sent. I prefer to forward my own ports.

My main criteria is that it is reliable. My current router is extremely flaky. When using FileZilla, it won't make the data connection and I get a 425 error. Then if I merely go to my router's IP with a web browser, and try FileZilla again, it will work. I don't even have to log into the router or change any settings. Simply browsing to 10.0.1.1 (my router's IP) will slap it and make it recognize it needs to let FileZilla's data connection through. It's a very repeatable thing. And also, lately, my "route add" functionality has not been sticking, and I keep having to do ipconfig /release, /renew. I think it's because my router is full of fail.

Sarky git, but very true :-)

In serious though, latrosicarius, to get decent advice you'll need to provide some details. Home/small business? Existing devices, what they're used for etc...

utterly unconnected. you really need to understand more before you make sweeping statements.

Only quoting his earlier post - it is what he said he would be using for!

If he truly wants professional grade routers - there are some here

eUnifi the reselling division of Unifi Communications Ltd

There are some cheaper ones with integrated services - but the OP said that he didn't want those (or understand the specifications) and ruled out the excellent Draytek products for that reason.

If it wasn't meant then sorry, but I couldn't help but detect just a hint of deadpan humour peterb. I thought it was funny anyway

It doesn't have to be specialised, but it may have some QoS stuff built in. Stuff like VoIP and UDP gaming packets are a lot more fussy than say SSH.

It's all just data, and I would hope the router does NOT do any SPI or DPI inspection into the packets being sent. I prefer to forward my own ports.
You mean stateful packet inspection and deep packet inspection? These are related to firewalls rather than routers per se, and will typically only be configured for incoming and traffic - the same goes with port forwarding.

My main criteria is that it is reliable.
For what? ADSL? Cable? SDSL? Fibre? ATM?

And also, lately, my "route add" functionality has not been sticking, and I keep having to do ipconfig /release, /renew. I think it's because my router is full of fail.
You mean you're adding static routes on your PC rather than your router right? That being the case, this has nothing to do with the router. Also, refreshing your DHCP will almost certainly make no difference. Why are you fiddling around with static routing? Do you have multiple network segments 'inside' your firewall?

Re: Looking for a professional router

I recommend Draytek. Which one depends on your requirements. In terms of reliability, I've used several for my own clients because they have VPN endpoint capability. Some of these have been in place for up to 3 years now and never been restarted. I've never had a client call me with a problem that's been the fault of a Draytek router.

Sorry to jump in here - but if you are looking for a professional router (bearing in mind cost hasn't been flagged as an issue) - look at Cisco - (I'm thinking ebay) - you should be able to pick up something like a 2821 with the right interface cards (whatever you need) for sub £50.

Total granular control - unbeatable feature set - end of.

Fair one, but you don't need extensive training and vendor qualifications to configure a Draytek Cisco's aren't for just everyone....
