    Homeplug

Thinking of getting something like this: Dynamode 85Mbps Homeplug Adapter - Twin Pack **Great Value** - Ebuyer
Am I correct in thinking that all I need to do is plug in one end into the power plug next to the router and the other in the one next to my computer. Then I connect them both with cat 5? Does it work well? Will it be good for gaming? and is the one above good?

    Re: Homeplug

I can't comment on the brand, but yeah you have the right idea. Setup is easy. Mine work well, with the exception of occasional dropouts on xbox live when playing cod4.
That said, I'm not the only one with that problem so don't think it's a Homeplug issue.

    Re: Homeplug

Homeplugs are great but if you thinking of streaming media at some point in the future I'd recommend that you get the Homeplug AV200 ones rather than the 85Mbps,

    Re: Homeplug

usr the 200Mbps Dlink plugs but in a gigabit switch they still only connect at 100Mbps....

    Things to know

It must be plugged straight into the wall and not into an extension
You must not have a split board in your fuse box
Any other slighly faulty product or very high draw products plugged in near to the homeplug socket will cause connection issues.

You shouldn't have got the Dlink ones, I believe their are known issues with them. I have Solwise AV200 Homeplugs, I use them in an extention lead with crappy piro wiring around my old flat and they work brilliantly. High draw products do not cause any issue the homeplug connection.

The Dlink where tested as the fasted, the problems are with them overheating but I keep them well ventilated.

Although that is probably the recommendation it's not a requirement. My Zyxel 200 Homeplug has been streaming media fine for the past few weeks and it's connected to an extension with 8 sockets on the end. No stutters yet and I move large files to and from the NAS with it. My main PC (temporarily in the same room as the TV) is plugged into another 8 socket extension that also drives my other Homeplug, monitor, phone, and desktop PC. I also move large files to and from the NAS on it while playing WoW.

    EDIT: Typo.

You can plug them into a normal extension as long as it's not a surge protector (might that be your problem?).

Apart from that they are excellent. I have a ZYXEL 200Mbps set and they work perfect. It does depend on the state of your wiring as well so take that into consideration. I've never had a drop out and not noticed any slowdown on my network. In fact I'm planning on getting another one to connect my XBOX360 up to the network.

All three of my Zyxel's (one NAS, one HTPC, one Desktop) are plugged into 8 plug Belkin extensions with surge protection (however well that actually works). I am in a new build with decent wiring though which could make a difference.

EDIT: In fact it's three of these: Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK.

Very strange, I did read that but never tried it out with a surge protected extension lead. I'm sure it says on the ZYXEL manual not to plug them into a surge protector. It might be that it's either not recommended, it's not meant to work or it degrades the performance?

    Re: Homeplug

Homeplugs work between about 1-34MHz, as such anything that coudl act as a filter, or an arieal (picking up those frequencies) will slow it down.

Fuses in 3 pin plugs could do this by a filter, as could the extension lead.

Often its not the wiring per say, as good coper wire won't make much of a difference at this frequency. Lack of earthing on anything large enough to pick up a signal (even if its double insulated) connected anywhere on the ring could create interfereance too. Having the wires running in brick/agregateblock rather than paper thin stud walls etc will also help reduce interfereance.

An extension lead i wouldn't of thought would of made *that* much difference, i'm etmpted to have a play after removing the fuse (naughty!) in one too see if thats the main speed hit (i'd imagine it would be).
