Which ISP for £14.99 per month?

The ADSL line that I am paying for at my parents house is with Plusnet and I pay £14.99 per month for it. Recently i've had to download various drivers for my father's PC and one of them was a 296MB HP printer driver (+ apps in a single .exe). The download took over 5 hours and eventually failed (the HP server reset the connection!). The speed of the download was around 17kbs.

I'm guessing that this is due to some sort of traffic shaping that Plusnet are implementing. There also appears to be a fairly low monthly download limit on the line.

So, which ISP should I move that line to in order to get NO bandwidth throttling/shaping or limits?

another vote for Be, if you can get it, not everyone can, other option would be any Entanet Reseller
    e.g. Ukonline

although a less hasstle option would be download the file at night using something such as flashget
you are correct about plusnets traffic shaping though, (my mum has plusnet) and its fine for her, but i manage her pc remotely and have to get updates etc at night.

if you didnt want or need all the other hp stuff you could find a mirror with just the driver alone aswell

    regards

Be - currently getting around 20-21 mpbs and it's lovely and makes you feel all warm inside the first time you download something and see the counter fly down.

I'll tell you who to avoid and not touch with a bargepole, Tiscali and Virgin Media! A few friends of mine have BE at there uni houses and have been very impressed with the level of service and the speed offered. Zen is meant to be very very good as well if a tad expensive.

Bethere when it's working is great, and it's generally stable. Their customer service is highly variable though and their technical trouble shooting leaves a lot to be desired. I dread calling them. You'll get better service and have lower blood pressure if you raise a web ticket. Having said that I only had to contact them about 4 times over 16-18 months and only once did it take an excessive amount of time to correct the problem (12-14 days).

Re: Which ISP for £14.99 per month?

I signed up with BeThere in the end - £14 per month for up to 8Mbs. I already use BeThere for one line at my own home so know the service but was looking for other options that I may not have been aware of but I think BeThere are hard to beat. I could, in fact, have gone with O2 who are doing a special offer for £12.50 per month for the up to 8Mbs service but played it safe with BeThere.

O2 and BeThere are the same. O2 own Be.

Re: Which ISP for £14.99 per month?

The migration from PlusNet to Be* has been very smooth. I got plenty of text messages at all stages of the migration to Be* and have just received a text confirming that my line is now active. They even waived the connection fee as I already have one ADSL line with them. The Be* modem arrived several days ago but i'll be using my Netgear DG834N router on the line instead.

All in all, a big thumbs up to Be* for a flawless migration and excellent communication throughout.

Of course, I need to see what my linespeed will be but i'm sure it's going to be better than Max ADSL.
