    Which cable router for virgin?

I am due to have virgin fitted next week.

And upon reading the spec, I dont get a router. I can pay £40 for a wireless kit..Anyone know what this is?

Or I can sack that and buy my own router.. Any reccomendations?

Its just basic virgin media, with tv and phone.

    TIA

For £40 you're as well getting your own - one of the wrt54g series? Would you trust Virgin to get you a decent one?

Re: Which cable router for virgin?

Is there a way to guarantee that WRT54GS will support DD-WRT? Some versions of that model won't support custom firmwares IIRC.

Re: Which cable router for virgin?

Buy the GL, not the GS. The GL version is designed to be Linux compatible.

Just to echo what everyone has said here, its a great router. I don't use DD-WRT, but tomato instead

Another vote for the WRT54G series - I use tomato firware with mine too, so much mroe stable than the linksys firmware.

Re: Which cable router for virgin?

I had a Netgear MR814v2 running on Virgin Media/Blueyonder for years with no problems. Just recently moved house and was switching my main PC to wireless so bought a Linksys WRT54GL in preparation.

Unfortunately once Virgin Media came to do the install they realised the cable hadnt been layed as far as my house, so I have been forced to switch to adsl (512k expected) So basically now I have a brand new router sitting in a box going to waste.

Anyways, got a mate on VM who was having no end of trouble with a belkin router, advised him to go get a WRT54GL and he has been fine since.

Re: Which cable router for virgin?

Yeah I forgot to mention that the GS version doesn't use the full DD-WRT it uses a micro version so you don't get everything on offer, but as I got mine for free I wasn't complaining.

Re: Which cable router for virgin?

    I run a Buffalo WBR2-54GS (i think) running DD-WRT.
Solid as a rock for ages
Also have a D-Link 524 which is OK.
