    BT Internet

Anyone else suffer with horrible connection speeds with BT 8Meg?

Mines been rubbish since the start of the contract. Really wishing I could switch to a different provider.

Any opinions on the best provider of the moment? Cable not in the area though

    Cheers,
    TK

    Re: BT Internet

I get OK speeds at home on BT Internet. We get about 6.5Mbps fine. Just my brother and I accusing each other of nabbing the bandwidth.

Might need a new router to fix that but I'll see if I'm living at home after Uni or not.

Might switch to Be if available on my exchange. Don't think BT is the best deal out there.

I certainly feel like we are getting a less than average service for the price.

A friend (who is in cable area) is paying the same price for 20Meg Virgin Media which is working at a ridiculous speed.

I think my biggest gripe with BT is that they are so hard to get in touch with over the phone and when you do the people clearly do not speak English as a first language which makes communication a nightmare.

    Re: BT Internet

True. I've just checked Be and we could potentially get 24Megs for £22 a month. We are 543m from the exchange. The package we are on is gone now so I've no idea what package we are on currently but its between £20.99 and £24.99. So for a similar price we could potentially go from 6.5Megs to up to 24Megs. Bargainous I think.

And I know what you mean about the support. I got some silly tart who was moaning at me for not taking her up on the "excellent" offer she was "authorised" to give me.

    Re: BT Internet

Okay first of all it may not be the ISP it could be how far you are away from the exchange a problem which plagues ADSL I used to get 4mb on an upto 8mb line thats why they say upto 8mb. It's okay in theory getting a 24mb/s line but you may only get 8mb/s which will dissapoint you paying the extra for less. I would advise anybody who wants full speed to switch to cable if they can if you can't then your stuck really ADSL is a terrible way to connect to the net its slow and always with stupid limits.

I would run speed tests report them to your isp and they can probably figure it out. Its more than likely an exchange problem.

I used some postcode distance calculating sites and the distance between my BT exchange postcode and my postcode was so small the sites were all saying 0miles.

So I found which told me the distance was 543m. So if people need to find out how far from their exchange they actually are the DFES website, weirdly, seems to be the best.

What you have to remember is that you are looking at postcode distances, this in no way will reflect the true cable distance between you and the exchange.

Well it is a decent measure. Obviously not going to be 100% exact.
