    wireless network at home

    hello all,
1st post here so be gentle!!! lol

i have a 2wire wireless router that acts as my modem and wireless network router
i have however poor signal strength outside my house (in garden etc)
so (probably incorrectly!) i purchased a netgear rangemax 240 wpnt834 and was hoping to put this over the otherside of my home to send signal around to the affected area(so wife and daughter can use laptops outside in better weather)
my problem is how to connect it all together.my broadband is via orange and this goes to the 2wire router,i was hoping to be able to use one of the 4 ethernet connections to be the broadband in on my netgear but its not as easy as that is it!!
so how(if at all )could i setup my system as i wish to keep the 2wire router in position etc can i get the netgear to receive internet through this router and then send it out wirelessly

go easy please,1st time post and im an electrician by trade so not as clued up as you people !!! lol

    cheers in advance

    Welcome to Hexus!

You really needed to buy one of these (or something like it)

Hawking Technology HWREG1 Wireless G Universal Range Extender

or a plain wireless acess point.

However you have bought another ADSL router. The new one might have better range than the one you have, so you could try changing them (transfer the settings from the old one)

It may be possible to use the one you have bought as an access point by connecting the ethernet port ion one to the other. If they are outo sensing ports (I haven't checked) then a standard cable will work. otherwise you will need a crossover cable. You will need to configure the new device quite carefully, disabloing most of the standard router functions (DHCP etc) except for the wireless bits.

    Re: wireless network at home

hi and thanks for replying, ive got it linked from the 2wire ethernet port to the "internet in" on the netgear.my laptop is detecting it now after some conflicts with the 2wire router software(i take it they all like to be the dominant router)i got a router behind router message but it said it would take care of it automatically,i just cant seem to be able to run setup software as it says the netgear is not connected to the internet(im getting an orange light that blinks/flashes with the i symbol) but the wifi light is constant blue and as mentioned my laptop detects it but without the software i dont know how to obtain the network key
as i said before im a bit thick when it comes to computer tech, just hoped it would all play nicely together ! lol

    thanks

    Re: wireless network at home

No need to call yourself thick, there is a lot to know when it comes to this stuff.

It sounds like the Netgear has switched itself into Access Point mode automatically. Ignore the setup software and let it do its thing. Log in via the built in web server. If you don't know the IP address for it, then log into your existing router and see what address it is giving the Netgear.

Once you are in the Netgear web interface you can turn on and specify the wireless security, including specifying your own network key.
