    Question utilising two internet connections

Hi, i was wondering if it is possible to configure my pc to use 2 internet connections?

Here is the situation i have a broadband connection at home, my sister has recently moved in a few doors down and also has a wireless access point with a BT home hub which i also have access to, they are not very heavy users of the net, so one day i got an idea of utilising their connection.

I several articles on the net about load balancing but that has more to do with larger infrastructures and incomming connections. What im looking for is a way to virtually join two access points so that it is recodnised as 1 internet source.

Is it possible to do this on a small scale without buying excess equipment etc?

i have two net adapters connected to each of the networks.

Any help would be apreciated, even if you can only give a name or some info about a related subject i am willing to research this myself.

    Thanks in advance

using google there I found out that people are requesting this for dd-wrt, but I was thinking along the lines of software to utilize both because with dd-wrt you'd need to link both isps to the same modem.

still reading but heres a link to lots of interesting pages.

    Re: utilising two internet connections

The easiest way of doing this is to setup static routing. What you can do is have your PC send all traffic bound for certain networks through one router, and all traffic bound for other networks through the other........

That being said, there's no simple way of bonding the two together for failover etc, and it's probably more hassle than it's worth - especially since one connection will be wireless presumably through a few walls so your signal strength and bandwidth will be tiny.

if it's just browsing then there is no real point. and from what i have read from other people, it really isnt worth it. hence why adsl24.co.uk charge £500 to bond 2 lines into 1.

if its bit torrent, when why not just download half of the file on one connection and half on the other connection ( at the same time) then put them together across the network. then you're utilising 2 connections.

    Re: utilising two internet connections

well the point is so i get faster download speeds on p2p, i have also thought of that, but how can i make my torrent app recognise two different connections?

the only solution that i thought was feasible is if i use a virtual pc and make that use one of the adapters that way i can download through virtual pc and browse in my normal windows, however virtual pc is a lil heavy on the resources and i was wondering if it is possible to let my internet applications choose which network connection to choose.

    Re: utilising two internet connections

you can't, you can spread the load of two torrent apps over the connections but you can't make one use two.

To have some progs use one and some use the other have a look at the net route commands.

Spare PC, three ethernet cards, pfSense.
pfSense Open Source Firewall Distribution - Home

Not tried it myself though. One 24Mbit connection is okay for now...

    Re: utilising two internet connections

The OS firewall does look good, and may allow you to load share across two ISPs, but it won't allow you to bond the two together to give a single pipe of larger bandwidth. (That can be done, but only with two connections to the same ISP, and only with those ISPs that support it.)
