    What Cable To Use

I am in the process of moving my router further away from the wall connection and so need a longer cable. I am using NTL aka Virgin and need at least a 11 metre cable to connect from the wall 'socket' as provided by NTL to the router in another room. Exactly what cable should I buy??

I know I could just run a cat5 cable but I intend to add other computers later and do not want multiple cat5 cables all over the floor.

    Any suggestions. Thanks

Its coax cable, but I forget what the connections are called.

If you ring Virgin I'm fairly sure they will give you some free

I think Virgin dont know the meaning of the word free. They wanted to charge me £25 to come out and supply and fit cable. Guess what I told them....

    Re: What Cable To Use

If this RG6 cable has a solid core and if reasonably difficult to bend then that sounds like what I need. Thanks

    Re: What Cable To Use

Is it the screw connector? They are F type are they not?

Maplin have these and if you get a reasonable sales assistant (we are lucky and have a few in Aberdeen) they should be able to help.

    EDIT:

Yeah this should be it: F connector - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(and for far too much information on Coax see here: Coaxial cable - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

    Re: What Cable To Use

I have just been looking at the Maplins web site and cannot find any references to RG6, they do mention FT100 etc. Is there another name for RG6 cable. I am familiar with the F connectors, I used them when I was rearranging my satellite system.

    Re: What Cable To Use

FT100 will do the job as it is RG6 in theory.

    ps

Prices have dropped in the last few years!!

    Re: What Cable To Use

RG-6/U is a common type of coaxial cable used in a wide variety of residential and commercial applications. The term "RG-6" itself is quite generic and refers to a wide variety of cable designs, which differ from one another in shielding characteristics, center conductor composition, and dielectric type. RG-6 was originally a military spec where RG means Radio Guide, but is now obsolete; in practice, the term "RG-6" is generally used to refer to coaxial cables with an 18 AWG center conductor and 75 ohm characteristic impedance.
RG-6 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So as long as you match that reasonably, you should be fine
