Does this exist, and if so, what's it called and can anyone recommend one?

    Hi All,

I've got a Media Centre PC and an XBox360 in my living room which I'd like to connect to my wireless network. What I'd like is a box like a wireless access point, but the other way round - it would connect to an existing wireless network and allow the PC and XBox to connect via Cat5.

I'm not sure what it's called - is it a network bridge? Do any existing routers support that functionality or would I need an entirely separate box? Can anyone recommend a particular model?

    Many thanks!

its called a bridge and Linksys make some decent ones.

Some routers can be put into bridge mode, I have used BT, Linksys, Netgear and buffalo routers
    that can do this

    Quick update for you

I have run the Netgear DG834G Version 3 in bridge mode (Version 2 and below can not run as a bridge)

    A Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware

    A Buffalo WBR2-G54

    and a BT Voyager 2100

All ran fine as a bridge

I have used a WRT54GL as a bridge before - worked well and was cheaper than a Xbox360 Wireless adaptor

Why don't you just get a wireless card for the PC, and enable Internet connection sharing? Probably cheaper, and better performing.

that does mean he has to have his PC on and his 360 at the same time just to play online. over a 12 month period (depending on how much he plays) I am guesing the cost of running the PC will be more than the cost of buying an AP.
