    Network infrastructure help please

    Hi all,

I recently moved to be* broadband and i have been having a problem deciding what set of hardware i have is the best to use.

    This is my current hardware;

    Netgear DG834N
    Dlink DIR- 655
    Draytek Vigor 100 ADSL2+ Modem
Netgear Prosafe 5 port Gigabit switch

    Current setup

    Netgear DG834N >Netgear 5 port gigabit siwtch> D-link DIR-655

The reason i have the switch in there is that i have Dual Gigabit network cards in my computer, one to connect to the Dlink, and one to connect to the Netgear config pages, so i can change settings and see my line stats on either router. The Netgear is in modem only mode and i have the DGTeam modded firmware on it.

The Netgear is the best modem to use with Be as it uses the same chipset as the DSLAM (Broadcom), the Draytek vigor 100 syncs around 2mbit slower than the Netgear so that isnt getting a look in at the moment.

I bought the D-link for the power, also the Negear doesn't implement UPNP very well and i was getting some problems with xbox live and psn.

    Anyway my question,

Been looking at the new Draytek 2820N, i got to test one of these briefly and it was good although the model i had was faulty, been tempted to get another one. However, that would mean spending around £170 on the router, and then i would still have to use the Netgear DG834N, as the sync on the Draytek would be lower than the Netgear can achieve.

The main bonus points for the Draytek are speed and reliability, although i am not sure that i would fully benefit from the power, I would like to host 16 player games on xbox live and psn, as well as torrents and other such network intensive tasks.

Am i going overkill with looking at the Draytek, i mean the DIR-655 already has a Gigabit switch, Wireless N and a powerful CPU. I am not sure how many concurrent connections the Dlink can muster though, i know that the DGL-4300 could do over 1000, but there don't seem to be any figures for the DIR-655.

    Any help would be great

    Thanks

Not sure what to do, whether to go with the draytek or the keep the D-link.

So Dlink dir-655 or Draytek 2820N

    Re: Network infrastructure help please

Drayteks are good routers - I have a 2800 which just got better as the firmware was updated.

However if the Netgear is meeting your needs at the moment, then there isn't much point in changing it just for the sake of it. The questions are really whether the Draytek offers any "must have" features that the Netgear doesn't have, and if the Netgear is failing to deliver anything that you think you need. If the answer to those is no - keep it as it is.
