    Ethernet Cable advice

I am after 3 x 30m of Ethernet cable with ends on them.

Can anyone recommend which ones to go for? Don't want to spend a lot. I have seen Scan sell some but confused as to which to go for. Link please if you can. Thanks

    Re: Ethernet Cable advice

Scan only have two 30m cables as far as I can see (unless I'm going blind )

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=798920

    and

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=633075

Cat6 is probably overkill but there's no reason not to use it. I've never used flat cat5e but unless you particularly want a flat cable I'd stick with the Cat6.

    Re: Ethernet Cable advice

    cat6 doesn't bend

i'd strongly recommend against using anything but cat5e for patch cables (having crimped cat6, anyway). you simply won't have enough trouble running up to gigabit on a single lead with cat5e, to warrant all of cat6's downsides

    Re: Ethernet Cable advice

Are you putting this in the wall? Why GoNzo saif about mains cable? CAT6 is a bit expensive, is not flexable and only really worth it if your going over 1GBit.

    *edit*

Oh and crimping CAT6 can be a pain.

    Re: Ethernet Cable advice

It is being run under the floorboards etc to 3 PC's. So cat5 is ok then?

    Re: Ethernet Cable advice

if it has plugs on it, cat5 is best. if it's got sockets on it, cat6 is best. there's the rule of thumb!

    Re: Ethernet Cable advice

CAT5 is fine, just get solid if you can as it can take a bit of a beating. Its not as flexable but its all I would use for long runs in places that are hard to get to.

Also make sure its none toxic and you may need to have a look at your insurace, if your house burns down (god forbid!) and they find any cables they will try and default

    Re: Ethernet Cable advice

So cat6 is not worth bothering with as it is hard to bend? I want the cable with the ends already on it. So cat5 ok then?

    Re: Ethernet Cable advice

I guess it would be a good idea to tape up the ends then incase it catches as i move it about under the floorboards etc!!

    Re: Ethernet Cable advice

Aren't we discussing the difference between stranded and solid core cabling here rather than Cat5e vs Cat6?
Solid core is what gets used for infrastructure cabling and stranded is what your average patch lead is made of.

    Re: Ethernet Cable advice

The issue here is that he will be running it under the floor, patch cable is not the best to use in this instance. It will work but its very easy to brake and I wouldn't fancy having to re run it.
