    DSL-200 / Airport Extreme wireless?

My Dad has just decided to invest in broadband. He's gone ADSL and asked me to help set him up.

We're in Gibraltar, and I've got the ADSL up and running just fine by the cable connection

(Using the provided D-Link DSL-200 Modem) however, having a few computers around the place, my Dad would like to go wireless, and that's pushing my networking knowledge.

Being mostly a Mac man we're looking at using an Airport Extreme to allow wireless connection for one iBook, and two windows PC's.

I have the airport utility downloaded for the various computers, my difficulty is knowing how to wire things physically.

    Can it even be done?

    Thanks.

    G.

    It should be possible!

BT socket ---> ADSL MODEM ---> Airport Extreme

the WAN connection of the AE should plug into the LAN port of the modem....

AE should be set to pick up an address by DHCP too.

Turn it all on and it should work :-)

Forgive me, but I'm unsure of what you mean by WAN port and LAN port.

The DSL-200 modem has only two ports - the ADSL port and a USB port.

The Airport has Ethernet, USB, Phone and something else I don't recognise.

Normally the ADSL goes into the modem and then the USB goes from the modem to the laptop. And it works.

I can try putting the ADSL straight into the Airport or if I keep the ADSL going straight to the Modem I can then take the USB to the Airport.

Could it be that the problem is the Modem is USB instead of Ethernet, or is the Airport Extreme compatible?

Re: DSL-200 / Airport Extreme wireless?

You need a ADSL modem that presents it's connection as Ethernet (RJ45) as this can the be plugged into the WAN port of the Airport Extreme (I think the wan port is signified by a sort of sun looking symbol)

Draytek 110 is an ADSL modem that present's it's connection as an RJ45 connection...there are others, but thats the only one off the top of my head that I know would work.

WAN = Wide area network - the internet
LAN = Local area network - ie your home network

Alright, some changes made, maybe you can help further.

We've picked up a Linksys AM-200 Ethernet modem.

Unfortunately I can't even get that to connect properly by line let alone wirelessly.

I'm on PPPoA ADSL. Is there an issue here?

This networking is becoming very confusing.

    Cheers.

You will need to login to the router, enter your username, password, and configuration information like VPI/VCI values before you will be able to use it

The instructions to do this should be included with the device. If not, you can download them from: http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache...ient=firefox-a

    Yes, I followed those instructions.

I have everything set up now and everything looks like it connects, but no web pages are opening.

    Once again I'm stumped.

Re: DSL-200 / Airport Extreme wireless?

Right, I've now managed to reach banging head against wall stage.

I think I'll try a new approach. At this point I don't really care what it takes I'd just like to know what to do to set up internet access for at least three computers. How would you do it?

    Two windows laptops (wireless enabled)
One PowerMac G4 (without a wireless card, which is apparently expensive because it's an old model)

My internet connection is ADSL PPPoA.

I also am in current possession of:

    An Airport Extreme
    A Linksys AM200 Ethernet Modem

    ?

    Thanks.

Re: DSL-200 / Airport Extreme wireless?

If I was starting from Scratch?

I'd buy a 4 port wireless modem/router and set it up using the Apple G4 so that I had basic internet connectivity.

Then I'd connect the two laptops to the router using ethernet and check that I can get connectivity with them.

Finally I'd enable wireless (without any encryption or other linik protection) and check I had connectivity.

Finally I'd apply WEP/WPA and possibly some MAC (as in MAC address - nothing to do with the apple mac!) to secure the wireless link for privacy and a level of authentication.

Then I'd advertise the airport extreme on E Bay

However - with what you have... I'd get the modem working with the apple Mac - as before. Then I'd try connecting the Airport extreme to the linksys device and connect to that from the laptops. Not sure how you would go about connection a wired computer to it though.

Re: DSL-200 / Airport Extreme wireless?

Just wanted to say thanks to you all.

Everything is up and running. ADSL to Linksys Modem to Airport then G4 via LAN and laptops via wireless.

    Another case closed through Hexus.

    Best forum on the web.

Best of British! Hexus should get an OBE or something.

    Cheers.
