    Speed vs Latency

Ok, so we've switched over to Sky BB today and whilst it's bought a welcome speed boost and lower costs, the latency in games seems to have shot up. Previously in WoW, I would expect a latency of 100 or so but it's now around 250-300, and in TF2, about 30-50 for most European servers which is now 100-150.

The question being of course, why has changing networks made such a large difference? Is there anything I can do about it, or could it be that the latency is high during the testing period because they're still monitoring the line stability?

It's not the end of the world, the games aren't seriously lagging but given our primary BB use is gaming, it's slightly annoying.

    Re: Speed vs Latency

Your packets are now being routed through Sky's network, instead of $previous_isp's, depending on the quality of the network - and its load - your Latency will be affected.

I guess Sky's network isn't as great, or is busier than your last ISP!

you do need to give it a week and restart your modem every couple of days while it settles in.

Thought resetting it every day is a bad thing during the first 10 days as that's when they set your maximum line speed?

Atm I'm getting from the router statistics

    Code:
    		Downstream Upstream
    Speed 1856 kbps 384 kbps
    Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 9.1 db 13.0 db

Which, given I'm 6km from the exchange isn't bad at all.

    Re: Speed vs Latency

That downstream attenuation is horribly bad, your line is too far away for nice download speeds, ask Sky to drop it to 1mbps if you want a stable/low-latent connection.

    Re: Speed vs Latency

is anyone else using the internet, even for simple web browsing whilst you are gaming? If so on a connection under 2 mbit it is noticeable that pings are raised and lag can occur, I used to have this all the time on a 512kbit connection, my ping went to 300 odd when other person was browsing the net and sometimes 999'd out, depending on what they were doing, I think.

maybe your new ISP uses different hops to get to the same destination or something.

Nope, same useage as before the switch. Ran a tracert and its slow as soon as you go from the router to the 1st stage, averaging 80ms per leap, compared to about 30ms previously.

However, I've just realised what it probably is, there's more than one Sky customer in the area, judging by the WiFi signals put out and the various satallite dishes. Chances are, it's just a lot higher contention than previously (as I switched from standard ADSL to a LLU service).

Ah well, at the end of the day it's cheaper, by about £25 a month so it's sitll worth it.

    Re: Speed vs Latency

Ring them up and get through to Tier 3 Support and ask them to reduce your max delay to the lowest they will do.

This can make you line unstable but will reduce ping, but tbh i'd be more worried about playing wow crack then your ping.

    Re: Speed vs Latency

Sky Pings aren't the best for gaming. Shouldn't be that high though. Try on ethernet if you are on wireless. See if there's any difference.
