Advice on ADSL faceplate and filter please.

    Lo guys

I have just got my BT line reactivated with a new master socket fitted. The modem/router and the PC are about 30' away in the back room. I was thinking about getting an ADSL faceplate with a built in filter and an RJ11 port, I could then get a high quality cable to reach the back room.
Does the faceplate need to be filtered ?
There will be no phone connected to the line for the most part.
If I can use a filtered faceplate without any issues then I will, as it is easier to get high quality RJ11 cables.
    Thanks

Adsl v1.0 (or above) has a build in filter so no need for filters at your main or extn phones if any . You should be able to buy one from BT . Pity you did not order one when you got your 'master socket' fitted you would have saved a bit. Ideally it would be best to have the adsl socket where the computer/router is , instead of running a long rj 11 cord.

Re: Advice on ADSL faceplate and filter please.

ADSL as delivered over a telephone line requires filtering. You need good quality filters that are impedance matched both for the voice port and the ADSL port. There are two ways of doing this.

    1. Put a filter on every phone or other ddevice (freeviewbox, skybiox, fax, answering machine etc) that is connected to the extension wiring - and you can plug your router into any one of these (or any other socket - preferably via a filter - some will say that is not necessary - but you get better re4sults if you do - and you are using a BT approved device)

    2. Filter the line at the master socket. This meansd that all the extension wiring is filtered so you can plug any device in any extension socket - except for a router. This has to be connected at the faceplate to the ADSL port. You can extend the wiring at that point - either from the faceplate to the router, or better, using cat5 cable from the router output ports to wherever the computer (s) will be.

Re: Advice on ADSL faceplate and filter please.

    Cheers guys

@ merdat, when I phoned to reactivate my line the Sales girl would only supply an ADSL faceplate if I was ordering broadband from them, other users may not have had this response.
The Openreach engineer said he did not carry them either...well, whatever.

If I've got one of these http://www.adslnation.com/products/xte2005.php then it won't make any difference to the connection if the lead is 1m or 10 metres long, I will be connecting into a modem and not into a combined modem router as it may have read above.
As long as I use a good quality network standard RJ11 then it should be sweet ?

@peterb, unfortunately there is no power supply near the socket and I didn't fancy asking the BT man to start scratting around in the cellar, cabling to the back room

All in all a bit of a dogs dinner, but if I can just RJ11 cable to the modem then all will be good.

Any other thoughts feel free to say

    Thanks

Re: Advice on ADSL faceplate and filter please.

I'm a bit confused by your last post. You need to connect the ADSL port to a modem and then to the computer or a router, or to a modem/router - you cannot connect it directly to a router.

(The port is RJ11, ethernet is RJ45.)

Re: Advice on ADSL faceplate and filter please.

I thought my last post actually clarified things
You know, where I said I would be connecting into a modem from the faceplate.
But yeah I will be going, from ADSL faceplate > RJ11 cable to modem > RJ45 cable to PC, does that sound right ?

Anyway it seems as though my plan will be ok I reckon.

    Thanks

Yes! Thats what I thought originally! (Must have been weekend-itis!)

Yes - thgat should work - however the weakness in the system is the long length of cable from the faceplate to the modem - if you can get cat 5 terminateed in RJ11 plugs, that would improve the noise immunity of that bit of the link.

Re: Advice on ADSL faceplate and filter please.

Aye peterb, I am hoping the cable I've ordered is of network quality, I did a lot of searching and stuff to find the best one. If the worst comes to the worst then I could make my own, never done it before but it's just wires and I am used to working with wiring, may need a good pair of specs tho first

Cable will work ok , you should not have any problems. It's just as Peterb says it's preferable to have the adsl/master socket at the point where the computer is , but not going to make a colossal difference.

I've got one of those faceplates, no problems with it, ran a length of shielded cat5 from the RJ11 to my router, which ideally you want as close to the socket as possible. Mine runs across the hall where the router hides under the radiator cover.

Does the faceplate need to be filtered ?
If you mean one of these BT style faceplates:

    ADSL Master Faceplate Splitter: http://www.solwise.co.uk/adsl_splitters.htm

then it's filtered at the faceplate and you don't need any additional filters.

Additionally, there are two connectors on the back of the faceplate that you can use to run a high quality adsl extension if your modem is some distance from the socket although it's always preferable to locate the modem at the socket and use ethernet to distribute around the property.

I'd highly recommend one of these face plates as essentially your ADSL feed is being taken straight off the engineers socket and only the voice extensions are being filtered. They can really help to eliminate the effects of bad internal wiring.
