I never understand how anyone feels they can be morally outraged at the ISP's doing this. After all, they people they're targeting aren't cute and fluffy innocents but people who it's believed are seriously heavy music uploaders
I don't see how anyone can feel shocked or aggrieved about this!

I dont have a poblem with this. Provided if the accused disputes the accusation, they have pocedures for dealing with the complaint fairly.
"In a perfect world... spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penises, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship."
Yes, looks as if some ISPs are following - Virgin Media for one. Apart from the illegality, it makes sense for them to free up the bandwidth used by the hardcore downloaders of copyright material.

My broadband speed - 750 Meganibbles/minute
I like to think of it a bit like the RSPCA asking the leccy board to cut me off because they 'believe' i've been electrocuting kittens.*
Key word there is 'believe'. Tis not the same as 'proof'.
Still kudos to the BPI - this is surely the best way to save your dying business model. Wish i didn't *need* music then i wouldn't *have* to pay you bastards anything.
*no kittens are actually being harmed by dangel at the present time but he's giving it consideration if the weather does turn nasty this weekend.
I somehow doubt that 60 year old women downloading elton john songs are hoarding the bandwidth.

What about all those that have the BT FON system on their networks to allow other FON users to use their wireless?
SSL encrypted usenet ftw
IMO, the record industry deserve it, they exploited their position for so long and now are paying for it.
I doubt many ISPs will follow unless the BPI offer some major incentives. Kicking your customers because a third party wants you to, is surely not the best way to conduct business.

is it just music?
I think it all needs to be stopped... its stupid that people think they can download anything they want and have no come backs.
□ΞVΞ□
but then surely that stops most downloads............
what if you wanted to try every single version of linux available to man....
do they cut you off because your being excessive?
what if you watch youtube vids or stream content such as iplayer or sky player? do you get cut off?
they are doing it because the UK's infrastructure cannot cope with the demand!! if BT got there fingers out and sorted things........ then there would be no need to limit peoples access.........
Currently, yes. These guys are the ones pushing for it: http://www.bpi.co.uk/
Until companies start focusing on quality over quantity, downloading should be tolerated. Too many people trying to get away with selling you a steaming pile these days, rushed buggy software, poor films, regurgitated music, etc etcI think it all needs to be stopped... its stupid that people think they can download anything they want and have no come backs.
Would be nice to see major crack-downs on real crimes committed to real victims before spending so much on tracking down jonny and his copy of the latest crappy album.

i think this is a move for the best, ive only downloaded one album from a band i like but as soon as i listerned to the tracks i liked it and bought it, gave up filesharing years back because of the risk of getting caught for trying to cheat out of £10 or something is sad. All my stuff i get now is from the shops or online retailers. If they start banning people who download/upload games then that would be the best step as that causes alot of money lost for developers(way more than music) and makes the people who bought the game legit get punished by creators forced to put copywrite protection etc to stop people stealing it.
There is another good point, when alot of uploaders/downloaders are stoped then there is less demand on the network and so perhaps virgin will stop their throtiling connections etc.
It might be stupid to think that, but it is in fact the reality of the situation, and ISPs have been benefiting from it by selling 'unlimited' connections to anybody who wants them. The T&Cs essentially pass the legal buck to the user, and the BPI is obviously no longer happy with that.
Personally I think this entire attitude of dealing with priracy by sueing or disconnecting everybody rather painful to watch, as a massive opportunity is being missed. I don't understand why the success of file sharing has not been taken as the signal for a massive amount of demand for such a service that it is! I mean come on, if you're willing to pay the ~£40 for line rental and unlimited connection just to download stuff illegally, you've essentially paid the unofficial monthly subscription to unlimited access to movies/tv/music etc...
I agree with Hicks but I am sorry to say that Virgin will never stop throttling your connection.... ever.
But you would still need to pay for your connection at the same time. BBC iPlayer etc do a very good job of giving people the opportunity to download and watch TV programs for just the cost of your connection but the ISPs don't like that and wanted the BBC to pay towards bandwidth! So they wanted to be paid twice for bandwidth!
I think there are a few different issues here
1.) The music / film companies want you to pay for their products
2.) The ISPs offer what they can not sustain
3.) Users want to use what they are supposedly paying for and are not willing to shell out £10 to £30 on possible rubbish music or films
How can this be solved?
Maybe ISPs should just be honest, if they can not sustain 20MB then they should offer 10MB and a true unlimited connection ( I think we would all probably be on 4MB max in this case though)
Music / film companies need to either reduce the price of their products or put a bit more thought and time into producing the content
We the users should not be so penny wise pound foolish.
