any wireless routers with mixed mode that doesn't have performance drops?

I have a mixed environment of wireless devices, 802.11b + g, for music clients, and i have recenltly bought a laptop with 802.11n.

I was looking to buy a new wireless router that could take advantage of the 802.11n but i have read that most will suffer real performance drops when using mixed mode as the slower clients effect the whole network performance.

Are there any routers that dont have this problem? would the mimo feature on some routers get around this issue?

Re: any wireless routers with mixed mode that doesn't have performance drops?

Running 802.11b on a 802.11g network will slow things down, this is an inherent flaw in the way b/g work.

802.11n doesn't have this problem because it uses different techniques to get the higher data rates. I don't believe B and G effect the performance of N, in fact using a N router with G equipment will improve range and reliability of said G devices.

For more reliable N wireless, see if you can get one that operates in the 5GHz frequency, I think only the newer models do. If it is the Intel chipset in the laptop, that should work on the 5GHz band as well as 2.4GHz.

Thanks funkstar, that sounds good. I'd noticed some reviews of early draft-n equipment mentioned a slow down in mixed-mode, but perhaps the latest stuff works better.

i'm liking the Netgear DG834N which seem to work well with the bethere isp also
