    Homeplug Help for a Noob

'Lo people, long time listener, first time caller here.

Apologies in advance if the solution to this problem is so stupidly obvious that I should slap myself but as far as computers go, if I can't poke it with a screwdriver then my brain just can't deal with it.

After spending the past week wrestling with my wireless connection (old house + thick walls + being two floors up from the router = bad) and having to deal with some rather unfortunately timed 5k latency spikes in World of Warcraft, I decided to give this Homeplug thing a shot.

I got my Devolo dLAN Highspeed Starter Kit this morning and although it's all connected up fine (as far as I can tell) and the Devolo Informer can see both plug thingies, I can't connect to the internet with them. I have one plugged in downstairs (where the router lives) and the other one is in the attic next to my computer.

The router is a Netgear DG834GT (as supplied by my ISP, Sky Broadband who have been worryingly good so far) and my computer's running on XP. If there's any other information that could be helpful, please let me know and I'll add it here.

Thanks in advance for any help!

So you have the netgear router with a CAT5 going to the first homeplug socket in the wall

then upstairs you have the homeplug socket in the wall with CAT5 going to your PC?

    Assuming the cabling is ok...

Have a look in your Network connections and make sure that your Local Area Connection is enabled.

Arte you running Windows firewall or a separate one, if using a separate one make sure the Windows one is turned off.

    Yup, that's right.

All I've got in Network Connections is the Wireless Network Connection and that's currently switched on. If it helps any, if I disable the wireless connection, the Devolo Informer can't see either of the homeplug things. If I switch the wireless back on, it can see both of them.

The Windows Firewall is switched off and I've had the one I'm using (Sunbelt Personal) switched off while I've been trying to set things up.

If you look in device manager under Network connections is there anything in there about ethernet adaptors?

Seconded, make sure you have the LAN drivers installed (device manager) if that doesnt work, Faulty maybe as i found it really easy to intall mine didnt have to mess around at all, plugged them in and they worked 100 straight away

Homeplug is really good and really easy to use.

    Thanks

    *facepalms*

I KNEW it'd be something embarassingly simple that was causing the errors. It appears that when I built my new PC I err... kinda forgot to install the LAN Drivers

Thank you all so much for the help. My net works perfectly now!
