    VPN -virtual private network info

    hi
i've got a few problems with my vpn i have set up using the windows xp vpn.
the client computer connects fine to the server, it can see the servers shared folders, however it cant see any other computers on the lan network on the server side. I have ticked the tick box whcih says "allow access to lan" or somthing like that.

the other computers on the server side lan are not connected to the internet but just the lan network,
the only computer connected to the internet is the vpn sever itself. The vpn server is connected to the internet via a usb modem, with eset nod32 software firewall.

    any ideas,
    thanks

You need to set up your static routes on the VPN server properly and/or make sure use default gateway on remote network is ticked in your TCP/IP properties for the VPN connection.

I think your VPN server is giving you an IP address that is not in the range of the IP of the clients.

169 is not a true IP address and should not be used.

I would advise you to use 192.xxx.xxx.xxx

Sorry Jay but you've got this one wrong, its completely possible to use a PPP VPN to use the 169 "DHCP unallocated" address range to setup a very quick and dirty VPN without issue.

As to what Akaneria needs to do, god only knows. I'd like to know whether the other (i.e the ones he's trying to access) machines on the lan can get out to the internet when this VPN is setup.

Re: VPN -virtual private network info

AsTig says, 169.192.54.xxx is in the APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing) address range which a Windows PC will use by default if the DHCP server fails. The last two values value are randomly assigned (based on the MAC address of the adapter, so that a network can still operate on a closed network if the DHCP server fails. The range is 169.192.0.1 to 169.192.255.254 and is a class B network with the default subnet mask of 255.255.0.0

    hi,
sorry the private ip address was wrong, its 169.254.57.xx being 70 or 71. (its assigned by office router) and i have assigned this address under manual where you choose the ip address under tcp/ip

Also the other computers on the office vpn cannot get onto the internet, would this be an issue?

    hi,
    i followed this:

    http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=64926

i dont quite understand what you mean by values for default gateway, subnet mask and dns server?
isn't that all automatically assigned by the server side router at my office?
