    Wireless Router Help

    Hi again

I have the Linksys WRT54g router, with my laptop use the Belkin 54g PCMCIA adapter so i can use it downstairs and still access all my stuff. The problem is the speeds i am getting are dismal. If i grab a file from my server, i get about 1 to 2meg a second, very rarely any higher.

If i want to upload a file to it from the laptop, that's even worse. Something like 600k, 1 meg if im really lucky.

I know its never meant to be really excellent, cat5e standards but i was hoping for a bit more speed!

Is there any boosters, or ariels i can buy to boost the strength of the signal? I've looked on the Linksys site, and they do a booster but its only for 11b and i cant find a UK seller for it.

do you get naff speeds even if you are in close proximity (ie 1-2m) from the router? or is it just slow wherever you are... also this will prolly get moved to the network/internet section heh

    Indeed it will.

54g signalls drop VERy quickly as you move away from the router. Stick a few walls in the way and you will be likly to have an 11meg abit connection ( about 1 meg/second transfer rate )

get yourself a copy of netstumbler and walk around your house to see how the signal changes. Try and reposition your acess point if possible.

Sorry i posted in the wrong forum :/ Didnt look hard enough!

Its not too bad when im next to the router, but then i still only get 2.5meg if im there.

Obviously the signal is worse when im downstairs, that i expected but not as bad as it it!

You might want to try downloading the latest firmwire/drivers from the respective websites. I have the same router (but I use Linksys 11g cards with it) and I have no problems at all. Good speeds through-out the house and even a reliable (if slow) connection from the garden.

If that fails, try tinkering with the router options. Try selecting a G-only network, for exmaple.

At the mo it is set for Mixed, as i do have a Wireless 11b card for my PDA. Will change that and test if there is any difference.

I think i have the latest firmware, but i get confused when i go to the linksys website to find the latest. Never know which version of the router i have!!

Well changed that, tried it and i dont think there was much difference....

But im now thinking my router is knackered. The LNK/ACT light in the Internet Bank of LED's on the router is constantly blinking its nuts off. Even if i unplug all the PC's from the router, it still blinks... As do some of the other LNK/ACT LED's connecting to each of the 4 ports...

Not sure what this is, but im damn sure it's never done it before. I've tried resetting the router, and i have now put the latest US firmware on it, but still not sorted...

It's still under warranty so might be calling Linksys i think. Unless anyone's got any other suggestions?
