Virgin Media - no phone line required?

Ok, I'm confused. I've been attempting to (regretfully) order broadband from Virgin. I'm renting a house for the year to do me for my final year at uni. At the moment we don't have a phone line connected, and the previous occupants were using Virgin before they moved out.

So, I'm trying to order their broadband package from the interweb. I'm already having problems. When I click "Checkout" after choosing my package, it sends me straight back to the home page, after adding items to the basket that looks like nothing I wanted.

I've also tried ringing various numbers to speak to somebody, but they ask you for your landline phone number?! So I've hit a wall basically. I'm wondering whether its worth getting the BT phone line set up (there is already a socket there, need to check for a dial tone) and going with Be, which would be £28.50 including the line rental.

Could anybody head over to http://www.virginmedia.com and attempt to order broadband and tell me what happens? What would you people suggest I do?

    Thanks.

When I phoned up to order broadband from them in October, when they ask for a landline number, just say you're not interested in taking out a phone package, just broadband.

Just tried to order from the website and it said the facility wasn't available and that they're making improvements to their service, it then gave a phone number to call. Looks like some of your problems could be to do with their website.

Personally I'd try to shove a phone into the socket and see if you've got an active line, if not get it activated and go for someone other than Virgin

Whilst waiting for replies I gave it another go and got a bit further, I'm going to be another Virgin customer. Whether that's a good thing or not I'm not sure, but thanks for your input! If things are truely that bad, I've got 28 days to get out of there

Another thing, whilst on the phone she informed me that XL users were getting upgraded at the end of the year to 50Mb, so we shall see!

Yes that is true, although they did also say 4Mb customers would all get 10Mb by June and they are only half way through that role out.

On the XL package (20Mb) with Virgins current very harsh 'traffic throttling' you can only use maximum capacity for about 25 minutes before your throttled back to 4Mb... for a 5 hour period.

I dropped my 20mb package becasue they just could not provide the bandwidth at any time. I was seeing it as low as 2mb at times so I just dropped down to 2mb.

Re: Virgin Media - no phone line required?

Well, I have to say my initial experience has been very good. Speed tests show my internet being just short of 19Mb downstream. When downloading files its usually a constant 2.0MB/s - 2.2MB/s, depending on where I download the files from.

And also, as far as I knew, the line is throttled to 75%, not by 75%. So a 20Mb user will see their speed decrease to 15Mb. Am I right?

Re: Virgin Media - no phone line required?

I regularly get throttled and I can confirm that it takes you down to about 4-5 meg.

As that's more than the best I'd be able to get on ADSL I'm not complaining. It just means that if I absolutely must download large quantities of data in the evening it will take a bit longer. I can live with that.

I also regularly see download speeds of about 2MB/s

Re: Virgin Media - no phone line required?

If you can bar calls, or just live with responsible housemates, you might find a better deal taking out a phoneline as well - i tried to cancel ours and just get broadband, but the woman couldn't discount the package on its own, but effectively i've now got XL phone for an extra £2.50 a month (think it's now £27.50 a month for L broadband and XL phone with all the addons)

Plus you get a telly box with it, not much better than freeview but it's got iplayer built in!

Re: Virgin Media - no phone line required?

Don't buy from internet, call the sales and tell them that you want a basic Virgin phone line and broadband ( you case is a bit complicated as you don't have a phone line). It should cost below £20 all together.
The thing is in order to use Virgin Broadband you need either have a BT phone line (BT line comes with a phone number cost about £11/pm) or a Virgin phone line (comes with a phone number and the basic one cost about £7.50 a month).

You don't need a BT phoneline for cable broadband, which he appears to be talking about here. You most certainly don't need a phoneline from Virgin either if you go with their broadband.

I have a BT phoneline and cable internet

I'm on 20Mbps broadband cable, no phone line (I use VoIP from Draytel).
