Bad news for me that I won’t go with SKY.

Last month on my own I have downloaded more than 2 TB data. The PT service has very decent and reliable download speed.

The CS is also very good and they can change your speeds/ping all whilst you are talking to them.

Its obvious you have never tried it.

Just dont sell it or the resident 'Gestapo' will be onto you.
How am I wrong I have experienced this from at least 6 clients I have worked for and even spoke to Sky myself many times and these people are not mass downloaders at all.

Every time it was some indian that didn't have a clue and kept trying to speak to me like a muppet keep going check the filters and this sort of rubbish.

Like i said it seem's to be related to areas some are different to others

    ^^^very true ^^^

SKY do not throttle or shape unless your are putting excessive strain on the infrastructure (especially between peak time periods)

and in which case they just block excessive ports...

i.e. if you left something running using a singular port and it exceeded a stupid level then it would be blocked... if you hold back or change ports then it won't... simple as...

it's SKYs way of making it better for the many, while not holding back the 'power user' until it just goes that little bit too far..
Just dont sell it or the resident 'Gestapo' will be onto you.
    oh noes

and to get past the muppets on tier 1 just ask to be put through to tier 3 as you want to sort out fastpath... and then ask what you actually want to ask...

Your talking about Sky throttleing which in my experience I havent seen but then talk about virgin as a viable option. Virgin have throttling in place as explained here.

Of course if a person is very far from the exchange then Virgin is really the only option yes they throttle and stuff which is why I said about the stuff they have been pulling past few months.

It sounds like all the people who are saying Sky are great are basically not to far from the exchange or are using exchanges with not many users.

Northampton appears to be awful on Sky.

Re: Sky Broadband - Any good?

Sky/Easynet/UK Online are brilliant providers so long as you have a line capable of handling the speed. If you live three miles away from the exchange and have aluminium in your line it's hardly Sky's fault if your sync sucks

I'm with UK Online, but they're part of the Sky Broadband group now (since Sky bought out Easynet and founded Sky Broadband). I get 21.x megs downstream on fastpath and see over 18 megs of that in throughput after overheads. They NEVER throttle or shape, and I get 2.3MB/sec 24/7. I download about 400 to 500GB per month, every month, and still get full speed 24/7.

For the person who hits 20 megs on Sky's 16 meg package, it's possible they lifted the cap after seeing how good your line was (i.e. that it was capable of much better than 16 meg). The cap is pretty much there to discourage complaints about mis-advertising, in the "They said 24 meg and I only get 10 " sense. I've heard a few times now of people being uncapped just for the asking on Sky/UK Online.

As for the guy who pulled 2TB in a month.... And I thought I was bad!

To the OP, check how far away you are from your exchange by using the checker at DSLZoneUK or SamKnows (I can't link you til I'm up to five posts, sorry). That will give you a rough idea what kind of connection you MIGHT get, but you'll never know until you're actually connected.

I'd avoid VM/cable like the plague nowadays; Phorm, BPI, woeful STM, oversubscribed UBRs...

Re: Sky Broadband - Any good?

Sky even owned up to me they throttle in areas that have to many users or an area with high bandwidth use.

This was yesterday on the phone to them for a client because he was only getting 1.4mb when synced at 12mb and before anyone seize it no he doesn't download he don't even barely know how to use msn messenger and he was a talk talk customer before switching to Sky and got better speeds.

Your client must be the only one in the country then.
Sky do not throttle anyone using their LLU service <------100% fact

Speeds, especially on the MAX package are 24/7 constant (give or take a few hundred kbps).

Re: Sky Broadband - Any good?

IT may be that your Exchange was contended but that is different to throttling.

If there are too many ppl on the exchnge then the bandwidth is shared and it can mean that although you might sync at 16meg you only get 8 meg through.

How do you know if you are on Sky equipment (ie on their LLU equipment) ?

I didn't take out the Sky phone package - as I wasn't sure that it was worth it. Does this mean that I will still be on BT equipment, but using sky broadband?

Re: Sky Broadband - Any good?

It will be shared. Phone portion is still with BT but the BB aprt will be plugged into Skys llu equipment. its called SMPF ITs the way Zen do it and a lot of other ISP`s

Talk talk only do full LLu where they take the whole line from BT and the only part BT provide is the copper from premises to Exchange

Sky do not throttle anyone using their LLU service <------100% fact

Speeds, especially on the MAX package are 24/7 constant (give or take a few hundred kbps).
This isn't only 1 person it's 6 and from different sides of Northampton.

I remember AOL at one point saying the same thing and look how that turned out.

It's not 100% fact at all it's just reports that they don't unless you work there then you don't know they might have equipment that does it I know Be have this equipment but at the moment it isn't doing anything.

This argument will go on forever so lets just say Sky has bad but the good outweighs it so it ends up being value for money if you are a current Sky TV/Phone customer if not then options like o2/BE are the better bet.

Re: Sky Broadband - Any good?

Neighbour has Sky BB. Says up to 8meg and he never gets more than 2.5meg. We are about 3 miles from the exchange.
