Why do I always have to manually enter my DNS settings? (VM)

Unless I manually enter my DNS settings, I don't get some websites.

    Why is this?

I have a VM cable mode, ethernet goes to a Netgear wireless router, and this dishes out DHCP to the network setting itself as the gateway and DNS setting. However, unless I manually put in Virgin Media's DNS servers - then some website simply don't work.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Josh

Do you use the same DNS server that are assigned to you? Does the router give its own IP as the DNS server or the actual DNS servers IPs?

In your local area connection TCP/IP setting is both "Obtain Ip Address Auto" and "Obtain DNS Server Address Auto" set?

Also check the same in your netgear router page. Make sure set to auto and then restart router and modem giving a 1min gap before you turn it back on.

Are you sure the DNS server you use by default is working ok...

I had the similar issue a when I first got connected to NTL. The NTL DNS servers cache web pages and apparently can cache the fact that they are not there for what ever reason. NTL have a number of DNS servers my local one defaulted to had the duff entries in cache, I just used google to find another NTL DNS and configured IE/Firefox to always use that. After a few months I set the DNS back to automatic I guess my local DNS has the cache cleared/updated.

This is the page that help me out the most it, I guess it should be applicable to VM:

The DNS server is set as my router - and when I do an nslookup it fails:

    Code:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Josh>nslookup www.digicamreview.com
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.1: Non-existent domain
*** Default servers are not available
    Server: UnKnown
    Address: 192.168.1.1

    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.

Any solutions - other than manually entering an alternative DNS server?

If I manually enter the DNS setting (193.38.113.3) from here:
    http://help2.virginmedia.com/help/ge...nced_byservers

The site resolves properly (see below) - but surely I shouldn't need to manually set it?

    Code:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Josh>nslookup www.digicamreview.com
    Server: ns.cableinet.net
    Address: 193.38.113.3

Re: Why do I always have to manually enter my DNS settings? (VM)

I think I've fixed it - I went into the router settings and manually entered the DNS settings into the router now the PCs automatically pick up the Virgin Media dns settings through DHCP and it's no longer looking at the router for DNS resolution yay!

I also changed my security settings from WEP to WPA-2 and this seems to have solved my Vista wireless problems! so double yay
