    Homeplug AV wired networking

Has anyone replaced their wireless setup with Homeplug wired networking over the mains? I've ordered some Zyxel devices to replace my wireless setup and was interested in other peoples experiences.

    Hi Taz,

I have both the wireless and the Zyxel PL-100 homeplgus working together without problem. The homeplugs replaces wifi where places I want to play videos over the network.

If you get the 85mbs homeplugs, (apparently) these are compatible with other makes of homeplugs, but if you go for the 200mbs version, these are proprietary and must use its own brand should you want to add more in the future.

Another note would be to plug the home plugs into the actual wall sockets instead of an extension socket, I have noticed a huge jump (from 15-20mbs to 60-65 mbs) since changing the sockets used.

    Re: Homeplug AV wired networking

I have a couple of homeplugs 85. I work in IT, and I was extreamly sceptical when I purchased. Since I plugged them in 3 years ago they have just worked.... I havent had to do anything with them. Except for when I moved house, when I unplugged them, and plugged them back in again....and they just worked.

Obviously keep in mind that both ends need to be on the same ring main, and the better your wiring is the better the signal will be. Having it plugged into a dedicated plug (i.e not a 4 gang or extender) will also improve the speed.

    Re: Homeplug AV wired networking

I made a slight cock-up in that I ordered the Zyxel PLA401 (2 x starter kits = 4 units). These worked great but I was extremely short of spare sockers in one room so had to use a 4-way extension lead connected to one socket for two of these devices and then hang 12 electrical devices off one mains socket. Anyway, they worked great but I wasn't happy with the way I had to rearrange my extension leads and electrical sockets. Plus, the supplied utility for advanced configuration DOES NOT WORK with Vista 64-bit! This is not a showstopper but does mean that you cannot change security keys or check the receive and transmit rates.

I decided to cut my losses and place another order with Broadbandbuyer for three of their "Broadbandbuyer PASS-PL-200AV-Kit Homeplug AV Starter Kit W/ Mains Pass-Through" devices (1 x starter kit and 1 x single device):

    http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop...ProductID=6388

I believe these are rebadged Solwise devices.

These plug into a mains socket and have a 3-pin mains socket on them allowing you to plug an extension lead for other electrical devices or an electrical device directly into it. This is a MUCH neater solution as it means you don't have to dedicate an electrical wall socket for these devices.

Furthermore, the supplied utility does work with Vista 64-bit and I could see that each device was receiving and transmitting at 192Mbs+. That is very close to the maximum of 200Mbs.

So a big thumbs up for Broadbandbuyers own Homeplug devices. They don't come in any fancy packaging but produce top results.

    Re: Homeplug AV wired networking

I have a Zyxel P-660HWP Router with inbuilt Homeplug AV and two PLA-400 and they work great. I did choose to update the firmware which can be found here:

    Zyxel P-660HWP Router http://www.zyxel.co.uk/web/product_f...0-8B9F732BF4CC

    PLA-400 http://www.zyxel.co.uk/web/product_f...7-28E458968C55

This updates the configuration utility which gives you access to an advanced option where you can configure the powerline adapters on your network to give priority to network traffic depending on its importance.

I can stream stuff from my pc using TVersity to my ps3 without any setting up.
